This is a rock quarry on the east side of Franklin Mountains State Park. Do we want the northwest side of the park to look like this?

Help save El Paso's Franklin Mountains

Target:
People living in El Paso and around the world.

The City of El Paso's Open Space Master Plan calls for a mountain to river trail using Arroyo 41A, the last unobstructed arroyo connecting the Franklin Mountains to the Rio Grande. This arroyo can provide a unique setting for recreational activities for El Pasoans and visitors as well as maintain important wildlife habitat.  Quarrying activities planned on General Land Office leased land adjacent to and including parts of Arroyo 41A threaten the integrity and viability of that trail and a portion of Franklin Mountains State Park.  We the undersigned urge our political leaders to work with the quarry operator to prevent quarrying from occurring on land in or adjacent to the planned mountain to river trail and to maintain the original design of this valuable recreational and wildlife corridor.

The trail sounds like a good idea. The city could commercialize it (i.e. perhaps you would need to pay to walk on it) and reap in some profit.

The mountains are beautiful, you can't put a price tag on mother nature beauty. If the mountains are sold you turn mother nature into a whore.

The Franklin Mountains should be a National Monument. Instead, we see one scar after another appear on the mountains as short sighted fools look for quick profit. In this case, the Army Corps of Engineers should veto the proposed quarry because it disrupts natural drainage. Nothing should ever be built in the arroyos. Doing so only creates problems with flooding and erosion.

The City's Open Space Master Plan to connect the river to the mountains would help make El Paso a better place to live. It would benefit the citizens of El Paso through recreational activity and help maintain the environmental balance of our unique ecology. The competing interest, a quarry, does not provide this kind of benefit. It helps to create an eye soar for a profit.

We have many visitors from out of town in my industry thru out the year. They all leave with 2 distinct compliments. How freindly El Paso people are, and the mountain layout within the city. Let's not destroy any more of what is lent to us by nature.

We are so careless with the environment....it is a shame...but many are like that with themselves....Sad, very sad.

El Paso Franklin Mountains have an unparalleled natural beauty that should be saved for future generations to appreciate and enjoy. If more people could visit and become aware of the beatiful landscape, birds, animals and plants they would agree as well.

The Franklin's are a beautiful setting at the far west end of Texas. El Paso has one of the biggest urban parks in the nation. Let's save it and encorage its use.

Please help stop the destruction our mountain. Please help us preserve the view especially near the city. We have quite a few people that use the entrance to McKellogon and it is bad enough to see the injury to the mountain as it is now. Help keep El Paso beautiful

The last thing the Franklin Mountains need is another blatant form of disrespect, a hole in the mountain. Please help protect what makes El Paso a great place to live, the Franklin Mtns. After all, we are the only city in the planet with a large Chiuhuahuan Desert wilderness in the middle of town.

Former long time resident of El Paso (over 40 years). It seems everytime I read about my old home town, somebody gets stupid and does something else to detract from what used to be a pretty good place. I now live near Pikes Peak in Colorado where folks are always concerned about retaining the beauty of the area. El Paso needs to get on board with what beauty remains.

I was born and raised in El Paso. The Franklins are a VITAL part of what makes the city so great! It would be a shame to lose the majestic beauty of the mountains to intensive uses such as quarrying! I can't think of El Paso without thinking about the Franklin Mountains! Do the right thing and protect the granduer of El Paso by saving the Franklins!

Stop allowing big business to rape our lands. Arroyos are important to the ecosystem and to our existing urbanization. Responsible development is a must, especially in desert areas prone to intermittent flooding. Jobe's destruction of these areas should have never been allowed. Just look at our Rio Grande--nothing but an ugly cement channel now. Keep El Paso, beautiful. We've got a beautiful city, stop destroying it.

It is important to maintain some of the beauty that this region offers. Arroyos are also an important portion of our city, please do not destroy!

To the El Paso City Council: Please reconsider your plan for quarrying activities around Arroyo 41A in El Paso Texas. It is recognized that building materials are necessary for a growing community, but existing quarries, or a quarry in an area of less environmental impact should be sufficient to meet that need. Judging by other large cities, the population growth projected for El Paso will most likely result in increased distress for its citizens. Many El Pasoans may find stress relief in the natural, but extremely fragile, beauty of the Franklin Mountains. Talk about health care for all. This resource for physical and spiritual wellness can be enjoyed by all. Please protect our environment for this, and for future generations. (At least put this issue up for a vote, as you did for the quarry recently opened in Northeast El Paso.)

One of the best things about El Paso is its landscape. Please don't take away any more of our mountains.
# 859:

Not only is it imperative to save these mountains for future generations, but we should understand that the eco system hangs in a delicate balance. If you want El Paso to be known as a destructive, anti-environmental city, the Open Space Master Plan is on the right track. Please revise your decision before it is too late! Nothing is worth the continued destruction of El Paso's greatest natural area.

As a long time former resident of El Paso, one of my favorite things to do in the area was hike. It would be a tragedy to ravage the landscape in this manner. Preserve the mountains!
