Maximum Penalty for Man who hoarded and starved over 100 dogs and cats

On January 23, 2009, a 66-year-old Temecula man was arrested when officers discovered 200 cats and dogs in various stages of decomposition and recovered 125 live, but feral cats and dogs. Located on the property of the Temecula man were makeshift kennels housing no less than 40 dogs of various sizes in each one. Around the property, in bags / boxes / cans / and sheds were the decaying bodies of 200 cats and dogs. The ammonia level in the house was so high that Temecula officers and animal control workers could barely open their eyes and had to use masks to breathe. In the house, there was no less than 47 dogs ranging from toy size to large dogs and many cats. On the entire property, there was ONE bowl of cat food for the living animals. While officers were at the property, a pack of dogs attacked one of their own and ate him because they were so hungry.The man responsible posted bond on $5000 bail, and was released from jail on the same day, and of the 125 live animals recovered from his home, 115 were euthanized because the ASPCA deemed them too sick and too feral to be adopted. Just 10 animals were able to be nursed back to health, including 9 puppies and 1 ten-year-old dog, and they are now up for adoption.
Please, help make it so that people like this man get more than a $5000 fine for horrid acts such as this. These animals are innocent. They've done nothing wrong. Why should they have to suffer at the hands of a human being??
