Removal of a religious symbol at a US Post Office

Removal of a religious symbol at a US Post Office

Target:
Rabbi Yochanan, Bailly Friedman and the congregation of Chabad by the Sea,
Sponsored by:
We the undersigned, respectfully request, that you voluntarily remove your Jewish religious symbol posted during the holiday season of December, the lighted Menorah, from its prominent display at both a secular and government run public building, the downtown Santa Cruz Post Office located in Santa Cruz, California out of consideration for those of us who don't share the Jewish faith. Because we are of either a different faith or have none at all, your religious symbol is a source of discomfort to us and gives us a feeling of being disrespected by you when it is displayed, on this secular, government owned, public property.  The right to practice religion, or no religion at all is among the most fundamental of freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. By removing your menorah you are ensuring that this essential freedom is protected by keeping government, in this case the USPS, out of religion.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and to consider our request.

Religion has no business being on any government property. It seems to suggest that government is telling people what to believe.

I am a resident of Santa Cruz. For those people who are against signing this petition, how would you react if there were a huge cross outside the post office? I know I would react much more strongly (against it) than the current menorah display, but they are both religious symbols, and they don't belong on public property.

There is no legal justification for displaying this religious symbol at a secular place of business.

I hope that we can continue to protect everyone's beliefs by ensuring that the government is not inadvertantly establishing the beliefs of any group intended toward belief or against a belief through presentation on public property, addition in legislation, or otherwise.

I am a resident of Santa Cruz county and am signing this petition because I disapprove of ANY religious displays at ANY government facility. For the last few years all religious symbols have only represented the intolerance, ignorance, hatred, and destruction committed in the name of or caused by religion all over the world. I have no doubt about the good intentions your display in the Post Office has in your mind and community, but to me it represents all religions and their inability to coexist. Please do not have a display this holiday season.

I feel that this petition is too anti-jewish. However, I still agree. But this should be with all religions. No crosses, No bibles, and please I am begging you take "UNDER GOD" out of the Pledge of Allegance. All these things make me uncomfortable.

The percentage of athiests in America is on the increase and soon will be a political segment of the population to recon with.

As an American who supports religious freedom and freedom from religion, I stand together with Mai Dao-Horton in requesting the removal of religious symbols from the Post Office facility in Santa Cruz. It is important for everyone that secular government facilities be kept free from the entanglement with and support for a specific religions so that all may feel equal in the eyes of the law.

Government and its institutions are to stay free of religious advocacy. We know what the opposite looks like, and it's pretty scary.
