Something must be done. If you want to save these wonders of nature then please sign this petition and pass it on to those you know.

California State Parks Foundation Opposes Massive State Park Closures

Governor%u2019s proposal would close 220 state parks

SACRAMENTO, CA %u2013 Last evening, the California State Parks Foundation (CSPF) received the list of state parks that will be closed if Governor Schwarzenegger's plan to eliminate General Fund support for the state park system is approved. A total of 220 state parks are proposed for closure.

"No part of California was spared," declared Elizabeth Goldstein, President of the California State Parks Foundation. "Entire regions of the state will see all of their nearby state parks closed and virtually every kind of park is on the chopping block%u2014from redwood parks on California's north coast, to the deserts in the Inland Empire, coastal beaches on the Central Coast to wooded campgrounds along Lake Tahoe in the Sierra. These closures will affect almost every California resident. Anyone looking at this list will be astounded by the magnitude of what is being proposed."

Only 59 parks are proposed to remain open, largely based on the presence of special funding, or because a park has an agreement with local governments for its operations.

"It is a sad day, indeed, when California's first state park%u2014Big Basin Redwoods State Park%u2014is proposed to be shuttered in the name of short-term and modest economic savings," said Goldstein. "The very reason that state park and the 219 others on the closure list were set aside was to preserve, protect and provide public access to some of California's wonders and history.  These parks are the very definition of our environmental legacy and the products of charitable contributions, public-private partnerships and countless volunteer hours that have, for almost 100 years, leveraged the public funding that supports them."

"The closure list shows, in a stark way, how devastating a proposal it is to eliminate state funding for the park system," said Goldstein. "It simply cannot be done without inflicting maximum pain on the public, local businesses, the tourism sector, and our environment, for what ultimately amounts to less than 0.62 percent of the funding needed to shore up the state's budget deficit. Not only will Californians lose access to a public trust resource that is theirs, but California's travel and tourism industry will be hit hard. Locally-owned bed and breakfast establishments, nearby restaurants, retail shops, tour operations and many more businesses that rely on parks for visitation and economic activity will be devastated. At a time when the state needs to encourage and retain economic activity, this proposal shuts the door to a vital part of our economy."

"The California State Parks Foundation, through our Save Our State Parks campaign, invites the public to join with us and organizations across the state as we fight this proposal. Now is the time to let our legislators know that shutting state parks and causing further economic impacts in our communities is unacceptable.  More information and ways to get involved can be found at www.calparks.org."

There are better ways to help improve California's budget, but this is not it. Please reconsider your proposition to close California's State Parks. Thank You for your time and consideration.

I have been running up in this park for almost 12 years. Please don't close it! It is one of the only trail surfaces that prevent injury in this city.

Our State Parks are what makes California so beautiful and such a wonderful state to live in. They are an asset and if they are closed I believe it would leave California wanting of an allure that makes our state of interest to its residents and visitors. I beg of you: please keep our State Parks open for us all to enjoy.

I can't understand how anyone can even tbink of closing any state park where you can take children to learn from nature. I have taken my grandchildren just as my parents took theirs.

Listen up Mr. Schwarzenegger, you may have been the Terminator, but you have no moral right to pass legislation that terminates state parkland. You should avail yourself of the importance these places have and the role they play in socio-economic and conservation terms. How about the revenue they generate ? Bitter irony......

It amazes me how Arnold has devestated this state in the short (to long) time he has been the governor. The very state (Hollywood), that made hem millions he has flushed down the perverbial toilet, and continuing to do so to the very end. Why don't you just quit and go back to doing his 'two sentence movies', I doubt I'll ever watch another one even if he does. What happened to the eco/green liar we heard in the beginning of his campaign...there is so much anger and to 'not so good' things I'd like to say...there's not enough room here. For those of you who voted for the jackass, it's too bad we all suffer for it...families. parents who might have lost their jobs, with little money to take vacations like,,,down the street to a 'State Park". Get out of California politics and have a cigar...on us.

It will end up costing the State of Califonria money if any parks are closed. Please don't do this to those who enjoy the beauty and accesibility of our gorgeous State of California. I strongly urge you not to close any parks. I would be happy to pay higher taxes to keep our parks open.

Please don't close our state parks! Our kids deserve to have access to these natural spaces...camping, hiking, getting away from the city. For many of us this is the only family trip we can afford. Closing the parks will be a shameful mistake for California and a sad loss for so many.
