Save Our Seas: Protect Oceans From Industrialization

Target:
President Obama, U.S. Congress, Department of the Interior, CA Legislature
The ocean is one of the harshest environments on earth. It is also the most fragile. All life depends on its proper functioning. Human activities are already pushing it to its limits. Given the ocean is the most powerful regulator of global climate change it is vital we protect it from increased industrialization and militarization.       The development of safe, clean renewable energy sources is desperately needed to combat global climate change, to stimulate our economy and to protect our national security. However, ocean energy development is fraught with potentially disastrous unknown consequences. Because such development conflicts with present uses of the ocean, it will also be met with stiff local opposition, wasting precious time.  We don't have that luxury. Experts warn we have less than a decade to mitigate the worst effects of climate change.    We therefore request the Federal Government to cease and desist from all attempts to develop any type of energy on the Outer Continental Shelf. Instead, we urge it to immediately institute an energy policy that encourages conservation and efficiency. We further urge the Federal, State and local governments to promote land-based energy sources, especially small-scale, locally produced renewables such as rooftop solar, geothermal and environmentally friendly wind.        Additionally, the Navy is set to declare most of the Pacific Northwest a free fire zone for warfare training operations.  Bullets, bombs, rockets, missiles, high energy sonar, depth charges and torpedoes will be fired into the air and waters of our coast, including radioactive materials, with deadly, permanent consequences to wildlife and ecosystems. We are asking the Federal Government to review this policy, so that instead of using our tax dollars to further destroy the oceans, the Navy may seek to help protect us from the real threat of global climate change.  Contact  us  at: www.oceanprotection.org  or by writing: The Ocean Protection Coalition,      P.O. Box 1006, Fort Bragg, CA 95437

Firstly how totally ludicrous that "the Navy is set to declare most of the Pacific Northwest a free fire zone for warfare training operations. " Surely we need our oceans to be clean and able to sustain the life that is dependent on it for their survival! Absolutely NO to Navy testing is my response. As it is our oceans, coral reefs, marine mammals and ecosystems are declining rapidly; therefore it is our responsibility to immediate stop polluting and overfishing our oceans and start the clean up with awareness campaigns and legislation regarding the overfishing and 'by catch' problems to indicate just a few threatening issues that need to be resolved. Beyond that our oceans are a source of great delight in so many ways and we have a responsibility to future generations to be honest care takers of all that we have been given.

As a Navy retiree, I think they could find a better place on the open ocean for training exercises. How about the big swirl of garbage in the Pacific that is the size of Texas? Use that place. If you can find the enemy there, you cam find them anywhere!

and please, begin an effort to understand then eliminate the gigantic plastic trash zones worldwide. as things stand, we are going to lose most of the ocean's food chain in twenty or so years...

Dear President and all Government Officials, It is with great concern I write to you in regards to the Pacific Ocean Northern Californian region ande the proposed Navy testing. The tenuous condition of our oceans in their current state in all good concious entails resoration and protection not sonar and weapons testing. With lack of further eloquence, may my message be heard with sincerity when I ask you to please protect the Pacific off Northern California from the proposed Navy testing. Thank you, Lavender Grace Kent

Targeting our pristine and vulnerable coastline and waters for unnecessary military exploitation and supposed "alternative" energy sources that has very little research done as to the impact to our coastline and marine life, is absolutely unacceptable!!! shanti balse

I live within sight of the ocean & I appreciate its beauty & wild creatures every day. I talk to people down on the beaches who are visiting from places far from the ocean & I know how grateful they are to be able to visit. I know they are not just my beaches, but their beaches too & we must preserve them & protect them for all of us -- birds & other creatures too!

What is going on in our our oceans and the environment is disastrous for our children, our children's children and beyond! Please PLEASE do what's necessary for cleaning up the ocean and not destroying it any further. I only hope it's not too late for this possibility to turn things around.
