Save the Tiger!

At the beginning of the 20th century (1900 - 1999) there were an estimated 40,000 Royal Bengal Tigers in the wild. Currently there are only 2100 remaining, with 1411 in India alone. Over the past century tiger numbers have fallen dramatically. Of eight sub-species alive in 1900, three are now extinct and we have lost over 90% of the wild tiger population.

We're loosing the world's tiger population due to rampant poaching and destruction of their natural habitat. Can you imagine a world without Tigers? Would you be content to them being relegated to fairy tales?

Please convey how deeply you're concerned about this rapid decline in numbers and why the Indian Prime Minister needs to make this a top priority.

Shri Manmohan Singh
The Honorable Prime Minister of India
South Block, Raisina Hill
New Delhi-110011

Honorable Prime Minister,

We the undersigned write humbly to you today with deep sadness and concern for the king of India's jungles - the Royal Bengal Tiger. At the turn of the century there were an estimated 40,000 wild Bengal tigers, now there are an estimated 2100 remaining, out of which 1411 are in India alone. Over the past century tiger numbers have fallen dramatically. Of eight sub-species alive in 1900, three are now extinct and we have lost over 90% of the wild tiger population.

The Bengal tiger has been the national symbol of India since the 25th century BC when it was displayed on the Pashupati seal of the Indus Valley Civilisation. On the seal, the tiger, being the largest, represents the Yogi Shiva's people. It is still designated as the official animal of India.

While the Project Tiger initiative launched in 1972 initially reversed the species' population decline, the decline has resumed in recent years; India's tiger population decreased from 3,642 in the 1990s to just over 1,400 from 2002 to 2008. Largely due to rampant poaching and human expansion into the tiger's natural habitat. The majestic creature that has inspired centuries of awe, amazement, inspiration, legends and mystery is now on the verge of extinction.

Although we write to you with grave concerns and dispair we still retain hope that a well respected and intelligent leader such as yourself will find it high priority to protect and conserve one of the world's most precious species for generations to come. We hope that you keep our cause top of mind and help pass through strict measures and sufficient funding to enact those measures to reverse the rapid decimation of the proud Royal Bengal tiger.

Respectfully.
