The City of Ashland is on the prowl to remove all animals and statues and other items from city sidewalks. This includes our lion, Wiley's waiter, Bugaboo's giraffe and Rocky Mountain Chocolate's bear. See the article in today's paper for more of the ridiculous details...
The reality of the situation is that The Black Sheep Lion was placed for safety, so that the customers exiting don't strike patrons and passersby with the door. In essence, it is a handsome doorstop. And for the safety of my patrons, I am not willing to remove it.
How you can help!
We are gathering signatures on a petition to save the lion.
Please stop by The Black Sheep asap to add your signature to the list of patrons who want to see the lion survive! Your support is much appreciated!

The Lion on the sidewalk is a land mark that I look at every time I come to Ashland.

Just what we need -- more protection from ourselves! Can't the City of Ashland (and every other government agency) find anything better to do with our tax and license revenues than to tweek over forcing conformity to, and providing shelter and subsidies to, some corporate/bureaucratic, God-less, sterilized, stifled, plasticized, paved-over, mindless idea of what life on earth is all about??? Get a life...Find a righteous justification for your administrative presence in our lives and our town. How about protecting the town from paving over previously fertile and breathing fields and trees?

I am happy to see the statues at Wiley's, the Black Sheep, etc. and would feel a loss if they were removed. They greatly add to the charm of Ashland.

These Ashland icons are an important part of the unique character our town offers. Please don't ban them!
Let's not white-wash what make our town so special !

These "icons" bring flavor to our community...let's celebrate the diversity of our beautiful city! I would go a step further and begin the process of encouraging murals and other artistic expressions in our unique city center.

Ashland's stores animals and sculptures add character and interest to the look of the downtown. They are lovely and/or amusing and should be allowed and even welcomed!!

I think this issue has gotten out of control. It's ridiculous that they city has taken it this far. Of course we want to see the local shops with their unique statues, etc. It's what gives Ashland it's charm and uniqueness.

This is B.S. let Ashland have character, these figures have been in our community for a long time and there is no reason they need to be removed. Get off your power surge.

If you added flowers to the lion would that qualify it as the "planter" that's acceptable?? Simply ridiculous!! Loved the entry in the fourth of July parade.

The lion doesn't seem to be in a harmful spot, and it adds character to the sidewalk, not to mention being a landmark by which to find the Black Sheep more easily... So why not let it stay?! Come on, people, don't make the town too sterile and boring!!

I hope the city will see that many of these creatures were placed there for a good reason; they are not superfluous. By contrast, what good reason does the city have for removing it? I think it's one of the treats about Ashland, to give that bear or giraffe or lion a hug and a kiss now and then!

As if there aren't more pressing matter for the city to be dealing with...the lion is indeed a doorstop and a landmark at this time and should remain there for safety and for my 3 kids that have played on it for the last several years!!!!

Come on...this is so silly to remove such iconic figures from downtown. I've traveled all over the state and most unique, artsy towns have unique characteristics such as the lion...that's what makes a town. I've lived here for 15 years and Ashland has changed and NOT for the better!!!!

The city is being RIDICULOUS. These are Ashland landmarks!!!! These are things that make this city unique. I've lived in Ashland for 14 years and have never heard of anyone falling into or over the Wiley's waiter, the Bugaboo giraffe or the Black Sheep lion. And my kids ADORE the bear at Rocky Mountain Chocolate. If people don't like these treasures go trip over something somewhere else.
Let's see, it was houses on the hill that had to be homegenized, last year it was removing benches so "ne'er do wells" couldn't sit in the plaza. And now the things that help give this town flavor need to go? What next? Will we have dress codes imposed? You know, there are still people like me who don't have a lot of money but work 2 jobs just to make enough to stay living in this town we love so much.
I'm so tired of a small group of people forcing their taste, and sense of what Ashland should be down our throats. ENOUGH!
ps. If you haven't seen the Wiley's shroud, you should.

Why is the City of Ashland constantly trying to strip us of our culture??? - such as closing down the Mobius in a commercial zone due to a residential complaint??? And then allowing liquor licenses for more bars instead of supporting more businesses for cultural performance?? Why do we have three Irish/English pubs now with the population we have and NO LATE NIGHT COFFEE HOUSES FOR POETRY READINGS AND OPEN MICS FOR ALL AGES?

The Black Sheep is, literally my very favorite pub in the world. The Lion is a stone in the structure that forms my memories of it. I come several times a year for the Shakespeare festival and to visit my father and sister who live there. And though I love Ashland for many things, from Lithia Park to Shakespeare to the Library, I love the Black Sheep the most. It would not be the same without the Lion marking the door for me and bidding me welcome.
