Stop Elderly Abuse in Nursing Homes

Stop Elderly Abuse in Nursing Homes

Target:
President Obama
Sponsored by:
Please let us stop Abuse in Nursing Homes nationwide there is an epidemic of nursing homes abuse, Elderly residents are often silent victims of physical, mental and sexual abuse and neglect some may suffer painful bedsores, broken bones, even premature death can result from negiectful and outright abusive, Nursing homes owners profit, while residents live in terrible and abusive circumstances. For years these conditions were unreported and unknown, nursing home residents need to be protected. Abusers need to be exposed and held legally responsible, there should be a law for inspections in nursing homes.
A note:  reading some of the comments here I have a comment to add some of the nursing home are good and clean and they take care of the residence but 90% are not good, and being understaffed or underpaid is no excuse to abuse the residence, I have worked in nursing homes for years and I would not put my Mother or  Father in one, my Mother is 83 years old and she lives with me and I take care of her, she took care of me and raised me in a loving home, so now it is my trun she deserves the best, so please if you put a family member in a nursing home check it out first.

Neglect is every bit as bad as abuse, it can cause a residents death. Majora Lane Care Center in Millersburg, Ohio would have caused my father's death in 2004 if he had not had his own telephone in his room. He had a bloody nose and had been on Coumadin (a blood thinner) and was suffocating on his blood and they told him to simply use measures used for a normal bloody nose. He called 911 and they were VERY UPSET that he had called for outside help.

So many times we have placed our family members in Nursing homes ,thinking this is the right thing, just to find out there being beat, starved, rapped, and killed, and it is written off as if it is our faults because we placed them ther, theonly reasonmostof these places want your family member is for the money they make off of them, some of the workers are rappiest and don't even have to list this on the report when they apply for the job, then a felony accures,so now this pettion is here sign it stop abuse on our loved one,it may not be your family member but, help save someone elses it very well could be one of us someday

Today is my dad's birthday. He would've be 90. He was a robust and lively individual, but fell victim to the slovenly staff of a local nursing home in East Providence, RI. Having been placed there in a skilled nursing short term setting to recover from a surgical procedure, he developed an acute infection that went unchecked for 3 wks and despite my efforts to have him sent for evaluation, they refused to further my father's care and he consequently died on October 10, 2007, 4 days shy of his 88th birthday. Woefully callous doctors and nurses, etc. all who were reported to the local Department of Health. They have done nothing to discipline any of the medical staff or even the nursing home. I gladly place my signature on this petition in his memory.

I know of several instances where elderly people are routinely forced to rot in bed all day and have to stare at the ceiling, denied exercise and mental stimulation. I know that you, Prez Obama let everyone know you go to the gym and work out as often as you want, so please wake up to fact that elderly people in nursing homes need mental and physical stimulation and exercise just like you, and do something about it and stop your eugenics population control crap.

You have every bone in my body behind this one! My mother would be 83 if she were alive. The nursing home profiteering industry who sets up their residents to live in terrible and abusive circumstances must be held accountable for the people who they hire and the abuse that they render to people who are as vulnerable as vulnerable gets.

For many of these patients they are aqs vulnerable as little children. We need to have safeguards in place to protect them. It is hard enough for them to have to leave the places they have called home without being moved into a living nightmare.

Let me first introduce myself, my name is Alice Mattison the founder of S.E.A. and the author of a book titled Who Really Cares? I am a nurse and have been for 45 years, 30 of those years have been in nursing homes as the Director of Rehabilitation. I have witnessed both physical and mental abuse of the elderly, which is why I am trying to form this organization to stop this cruel action against the elderly. On many occasions I have fought with administrations, who first deny that this is in fact going on, and secondly they refuse to do anything about it when it does occur. Unfortunately this is not only in nursing homes; it also takes place in their homes, on the streets, and in hospitals. We who are care givers cannot allow this to continue to happen. Think about it, this could be you or a loved one some day. We must do something to stop this serious problem, which has plagued the elderly for years, and will continue to exist if we do not get a hold of it now. If you are interested in joining me or have any ideas to share with me please write to: Alice Mattison 1301 Brookwood Bensenville, IL 60106 Thank you for your support in this matter.

I use to volunteer in convalescent homes when I was a young girl as I wanted to be a nurse. Sadly, there was abuse. I reported it to the charge nurse and left and never returned always wondered what happened and to this day wish I had done more. I was 15 years old and it made me so sad. Abuse of the elderly is so wrong. My mom lives with us after my father died and I would never put her in a home. We need to be more dedicated to our parents and our families and each other. We definitely need to stop those that hurt the innocent elderly. To the abuser: Someday you will be old and then what?

My mother was also a victum of horrible abuse, I saw a nurse violently shake her, I saw her left in soiled bed linens which led to bed sores, I could go on and on about the horrors of that rehab center. We were lucky, we got her out and she is at home getting the skilled care she needs, sure it's a sacrifice but the alternative of going to nursing home is out of the question for someone who has done so much for others throughout her life. Many of these entries share the same helpless facts, I have a few suggestions. Nursing homes and rehab centers need to know there are alternatives to their services, Home health care is theiir competitor. If we ban together and let them know that we as consumers will not accept poor treatment the attitude may change faster than regulations, which haven't been very sucessful. Another important tool, we all know " a picture is worth a thousand words" and with the internet and you tube it's very easy to show what we see as the truth. Arm yourself with a spy pen, micro camera, I wish I had caught that nurse who shook my mom on a spy camera, she'd never do it again, she wouldn't even be allowed near the elderly, but instead it was my word aganst hers.....you'd be surprized how people respect an image.

Many of these facilities provide excellent care, however, far too many do not. Often understaffed with underpaid and poorly trained employees, many nursing homes push the bottom line so far that they endanger the lives of their patients. Neglected, abused, and threatened, nursing home residents may suffer physically and emotionally. Painful bedsores, broken bones, or even premature death can result from neglectful and outright abusive treatment.

I just got done with my mother's civil law suit, we proved her nursing home was at fault! She died a horrible, death, sadistic , cruel, excruiting pain with no help at all. This happened late at night, when her family wasn't around, all due to her nurse's horrible intentional neglect!!!! I'm hoping now, to proceed with the criminal trial! I just hope that some day GOD will help me to some how, find closure with the knowledge, that she contemplated her own death for hours, with no help from any of the staff!! She was begging & screaming for help, but was ignored until she took her last breath!! Until law enforcement puts these nurses behind bars where they belong, & prove to the world THAT WE AS CITIZENS ARE NOT GOING TO STAND BY AND WATCH OUR FAMILY MEMBERS DIE THRU WANTON & WILLFUL NEGLECT, THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE TO BE PROSECUTED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW, WHICH IS PRISON TIME.What's the difference in someone killing another human being on the street then in our nursing homes. My mother was there for rehab only, SO SEE ;JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE A SHORT TIME STAY PATIENT THERE FOR REHAB, it still happens!!! So please people; BE AWARE OF THESE SO CALLED NURSING HOMES!!!!! don't let happen to my mother happen to your family member, & if it does, do go find out why & how your family member died!!!! OUR PARENTS DON'T DESERVE TO DIE , THESE HORRIBLE DEATHS!! I MISS MY MAMA SO MUCH, I WISH I COULD TELL HER I LOVE HER TO HER FACE, BUT THIS HORRIBLE, SADISTIC NURSE TOOK THAT AWAY FROM me!! This happened in tennessee in 2007

Elderly abuse is WRONG! The elderly should be taken care of by their adult grown children, not thrown away like garbage. Many other countries/cultures give more respect to their old people then the USA! In many cultures outside the USA, elderly are looked up to and sought for wisdom and guidance. They go live with their adult sons and their grandchildren until their deaths.

I would to love see the employees making at least decent wages and their hours not so restricted- the care really is effected by this. Short staff underpaid = poor care. My wife works in the laundry at one making 7.30 hr. The only way the residents get good care is out of love from the employees that are getting stabbed in the back by the corporate ownership(with undisclosed profits). Some owners are good but are being bought out by national groups which means less benefits for everyone all around, at least where she works.
