Stop Harassment of Dog Walkers in Bangalore City

Pet-owners in Bangalore City are being constantly harassed by many residents of the city when they walk their dogs in public spaces. Be it parks, roads or any open space. Many dog walkers are being threatened and targeted when they are walking alone in an empty road and being physically and verbally abused. The cause for their outbursts vary from

  • generally walking dogs on the roads
  • dogs defecating on the roads
  • walking dogs in parks
  • dogs sniffing trees or smelling spaces near their houses
  • pets accompanying owners in permitted spaces
Local laws on dog poop and allowing pets in public spaces differ from Country to Country. Countries like US have strict laws for pet owners on picking up after their pets and accessing public spaces where they are permitted. However, countries like India and France do not require pet owners to pick up after their pets and are liberal with respect to access to public spaces. The local municipal corporation has taken responsibility for keeping the streets clean.

Although, Bangalore local laws do not require a pet owner to pick up after their pet. pet owners are constantly harassed when they are walking dogs. Many dog owners in Bangalore would welcome anti litter laws provided they have the infrastructure to follow them like availability of bio degradable poop bags at economical prices and availability for dustbins at every street corner.

The residents, pet owners and the local authorities should work together to keep the streets clean instead of expending their energy harassing dog walkers.
