Circumcision is the absolute best thing for our sons. I chose to have my son circumcised for two reasons: 1) Religious background 2) Hygiene It is important to follow your own beliefs, but it extremely important to protect the life of your own child. The upkeep of the male genitalia clean when uncircumcised is too much for a child to learn how to do. And do you think a young boy is going to take the time to clean it properly? No. When the foreskin is left in place the risks of a boy having a UTI are more likely than a boy that has been circumcised. Even grown men who are not circumcised will atest to this. I've known several over the years who finally broke down and finally had the procedure done for health reasons. My Grandfather being one of them!

Canadian Paediatric Society "Recommendation: Circumcision of newborns should not be routinely performed." "Circumcision is a 'non-therapeutic' procedure, which means it is not medically necessary." "After reviewing the scientific evidence for and against circumcision, the CPS does not recommend routine circumcision for newborn boys. Many paediatricians no longer perform circumcisions." Royal Australasian College of Physicians "After extensive review of the literature the Royal Australasian College of Physicians reaffirms that there is no medical indication for routine neonatal circumcision." (those last nine words are in bold on their website, and almost all the men responsible for this statement will be circumcised themselves, as the male circumcision rate in Australia in 1950 was about 90%. "Routine" circumcision is now *banned* in public hospitals in Australia in all states except one.) British Medical Association "to circumcise for therapeutic reasons where medical research has shown other techniques to be at least as effective and less invasive would be unethical and inappropriate."

I'm afraid the only way to post my opinion is to be counted. Thank goodness there is a genital integrity movement. Every boy and girl deserves the right to enjoy all of the pleasure-receptive body parts nature gave them. Not one national medical association of doctors (not even Israel's) endorses routine infant circumcision. Foreskin feels REALLY good. It's HIS body, and morally it's HIS decision to make at such time when he can be fully informed. If he decides to amputate part of his penis when he's older he'll get REAL anesthesia, lower risk, a more precise cut, and some input as to style of the result. EVERY infant circumcision has an intended result because everything is so small it's impossible to do a careful job, and the cutter has NO IDEA how that penis or its skin would grow nor how much slack the owner would prefer to have. Google "circumcision damage" to see common horrid cosmetic and functional outcomes which don't manifest until puberty and which are never figured into the stats on acute complications of infant circumcision.

Circumcision harms men's sexuality by removing five of the most erogenous parts of the penis. Moreover, it prevents nothing while instilling a false sense of security, thereby placing both men and women at risk for sexually transmitted diseases, not least HIV. Parents who circumcise either do not know the harms or choose to do it anyway for their own selfish preferences. Many thousands of men are speaking up against this atrocity and many millions more likely are too afraid to voice their dissatisfaction, living in shame and embarrassment about what was done to them. STOP MALE GENITAL MUTILATION!

Whatever total votes you see above, take one away. Rachel Crothers, there is no such "medical standard". Several medical bodies outside the US recommend against it. Three quarters of the world's men live and die with all they were born with and it gives the vast majority no trouble and a lot of pleasure. The US is alone the world in circumcising a majority of its babies for non-religious reasons, and that majority is now quite slim. You're right about one thing; mothers who see one circumcision are much less likely to agree to another (video at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6584757516627632617&hl=en). Shirley Strang, the question is, will THEY regret it - or even resent it? Tens of thousands of men do, judging by the sales of foreskin restoration devices. And who else's opinion matters? Carol Carter, NO direct link has been shown to cervical cancer, and the indirect one (via HPV, for which there is now a vaccine) is so slender the risks and harm of circumcision far outweigh it.

Think those opposed to circumcision have not had multiple observations & experiences with real intact penis as men age. Though well-meaning to avoid pain & bloodshed to their beloved children, do not fully know what they are talking about. The medical standard is a fully circumcised penis & for many good reason, both physical & mental. Agreed it is a difficult thought for new mothers, but the long term vision of wisdom, intelligence & improved health for the children & partners makes this procedure invaluable. As a new mom, maybe it is not the time to observe the procedure. A circumcised penis is the only one to have.

My three boys were circumcised humanely by my very caring GP & we have never regretted it.

As a parent of each gender, I want this practice to continue safe and legal. Cervical cancer isn't pleasant either. For the few minutes the little guy has to be comforted as to the misery my grandmother when through, no contest, he wins.
