Stop the banning of Pit Bulls in Lakewood, Ohio

Target:
Lakewood, Ohio residents and owners of Pit Bulls
Sponsored by:
Recently city council member Brian Powers and backed by mayor Edward Fitzgerald put in a bill to try and ban ownership of pit bull "type" dogs in the City of Lakewood. Powers stated that the animal warden has had too many encounters with these dogs and suggested the ban. Fitzgerald backs the ban saying that one Lakewood resident was bitten in the face and they have tried everything and nothing is working. However, they do not enforce the law, they do not enforce the leash law, and they do not enforce other dog laws.

I personally have been bitten in the face and was mauled by a dalmation in the city of Lakewood. There was no ban put in place for the dalmation. Why does city council believe that if they ban this breed it will eliminate the problem?

My suggestion is this: enforce the leash law, "vicious" dogs (in their eyes, not mine) should wear muzzles in public, make the owners responsible, dogs that have bitten someone should be placed in quarantine while the owner resolves the issue with the victim.

I believe this to be a fifth ammendment violation! We have to fight to keep our dogs!

Please follow this link to see a court case that was appealed and WON by a resident of the City of Toledo:

Please help us to keep our loving and wonderful companions. My dog is like my daughter, I will NOT give her up, just as I would not give up my own child.

We the undersigned are against the potential ban of "pit bull" and "canary dogs" in the City of Lakewood, OH. We feel that this ban would create more problems in the city. We feel that the current laws could be stressed better. We feel that there are ways to live in harmony with responsible "pit bull" and "canary dog" owners in the City of Lakewood without taking away our loved ones. Please work on protecting our families by allowing us to keep our dogs. Require all "pit bull" owners to register with the city animal warden and be required to bring proof of insurance, their muzzle, and wear a special tag that shows they are registered with the city. We thank you for your time and appreciate your attention to this potentially terrible ban.

A ban against any single breed of dog is ineffective. It does nothing to address the underlying problem of irresponsible pet ownership. Further, it is impossible to enforce fairly and uniformly, as there will always be problems in identifying the heritage of mixed breed dogs. This petition offers reasonable solutions to the preceived problem of pit bulls' aggressive nature. While I do not necessarily accept that pit bulls are any more agressive than other breeds of dogs, individuals who are willing to register their dogs and carry liability insurance should be allowed to keep their dogs. Responsible pet owners shold not br punished because of the actions of a few and dogs should not be euthanized unnecessarily.

I am the President of a Cleveland area rescue... I do not feel it is fair to ban a breed of dog. Punish the people who train this animals to fight- not the animals themselves.

Pit bulls are victimized by bad owners, and then demonized by society. We need to be helping this breed, not banning them. I do not support BSL in any form. I personally own 2 pit bull mixes and a German shepherd, and I am a responsible, loving pet owner. I do not want my city to be the next one to enfore such a law. And after the pitties, which breed are they going to come after next? My Shepherd? Your Rottweiler? Your Doberman? Why not ban all dogs, because they all have the potential to bite. We need to stand up and give good owners and good dogs a voice.

As a law student and a concerned citizen, I believe that these poorly written city ordinances will only lead to needless litigation. Instead of "jumping the gun", legislators and law makers should create laws about pitbull regulation that will work, instead of just creating a hostile environment for citizens and their animals.

I dont understand how people can sit there and say pitbulls are a bad breed or a bad dog. There not bad dogs. Most just end up with BAD onwers. If the onwer treats them right then the dog is as sweet as any other.

I am sorry tht someone was bitten in the face, but I have been bitten by dogs and witnessed dogs biting people and none of these involved a pitbull,A real estate friend of mine in Sun Vslley, Idaho took her chow everywhere and that dog literally bit 20 people that I knew of. I made a list and still the honor would deny it, or laugh or whatever, but when pit bull does someething wrong it makes headlines. A very famous neighbor of mine had an Akita who literally left the neighbor goldens for dead and yet you never heard a word. I just sasw on a petition to ban pit bulls from beach somewhere that pits killed a woman in San Francisco. Those dogs were not Pits. Please look at the nightmare in Denver, Colorado to realize how unfair this is. Ban the deed, not the breed. Those of us who have a pit know that they are the best dog in the world and it is the poor abused pits who are used for wrong purposes who need to be saved. BAN THE BAD OWNERS!!!!

How about Council member Brian Powers and Mayor Edward Fitzgerald institute some legislation that makes owners more responsible and face criminal charges as opposed to making caring loving families put down or get rid of thier dogs ~ it's not the DOG you IDIOTS ~ it's the owners

We do not support animal bigotry. This legislation is simply racism directed at a particular canine breed.

I have a wonderful mixed breed named Rollie. He is the sweetest part of our family and it is not right that all of these dogs, based on their breed, should be punished for the mistakes of careless owners.

I do not live in Lakewood but I feel solidarity with the pitbull owners and others who oppose this senseless, discriminatory ban. I cannot stand by and watch this happen without doing something. I am an owner of a pitbull mix, Phoenix, who is sweet, intelligent, and eager to please. I am an educated person who has just completed medical school and has taken up residency to become a family physician, not a drug-dealing thug (although some may disagree:). I am also a staunch supporter of freedom and an opponent of totalitarianism, tyranny, and fascism wherever it may stand. I am a realist and know that these laws will be costly and difficult to enforce. The times that they are enforced will result in the loss of innocent lives or the forced expulsion of pit owners who choose to keep their family members (the dogs) out of the city not unlike the expulsion of groups such as the Cherokee Indians or Mormons. I also realize that the U.S. government has illegalized many things at one time or another to little or no avail. I am a fair person and realize that it is wrong for one sector of the society to play witch-hunting and McCarthyism toward another for perceived dangerous or immoral behaviors but yet assume immunity for behaviors within themselves that others may see as dangerous or immoral. I am sorry for Lakewood, Ohio and quite frankly, I am sorry for America. Our lives, our families (including 4-legged members), and lastly our freedoms are much too precious for this nonsense.

Lakewood has alot more serious issues than pit bulls. this whole thing is rediculous. They need to focus on crime and all the trash that has tore up this city over the last 4 years, As a tax payer, I am furious. Next it will be the shar-pei. Talk about ferosious. What will be next. Pit bulls have gotten a bad rap because of the garbage that train them to fight. I don't even have one, but just think this is crazy. If they pass this law, we will send a message and vote all those yahoo's right out of office.

I always thought pit bulls were scary, and then we were given a puppy pit bull. He was so so loving and sweet to my child. It isn't a certain breed of dogs that are guaranteed violent it's a specific breed of humans that are bad seeds with NO compassion or respect for life. The persons who are found to neglect any animal, child, elderly, and so on should recieve VERY harsh jail sentences without being able to buy there way out.A dog gets put to sleep when they attack someone and most humans get a slap on the wrist instead a major penalty. The culprit is always sorry when their freedom is on the line, but what about pit bulls freedom and the owners right to have them.LIVE,LOVE,AND LEARN.

Although I am not a personal owner of a pit-bull, I think the pit-bull ban will not necessarily solve the problem of keeping "agressive" dogs under control. Irresponsible owners of these dogs are the problem and should be the ones punished, NOT the dogs. The city should hold these owners more accountable!
