Stop Kenyan President signing flawed Biosafety Bill

Target:
All persons concerned with the safety of planet EARTH
During the course of this week the Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki is set to sign the Biosafety Bill 2008 . The Bill has many flaws. The ones that are obvious are a) There is no allocation for labelling of GMO products or ingredients allowing consumers to make informed choices
b) There is no allocation for redress should GMO products cause damage to the people or the environment
c) The people of Kenya were not consulted on the Bill thus it was not an all inclusive Bill but rather one pushed forward by the Minister of Agriculture

Should such a weak bill be passed, Kenya will be subject to uncontrolled GMO contamination.
The Kenya Biodiversity Coalition a coalition consisting of'Green' organisations representing  millions of Kenyans  will from Monday Dec 22nd be staging a week long protest  resulting in what will be Kenyas biggest  petition which  will be  presented to the President on Monday 28th Dec. Farmers will be staging mass demonstrations all over the country protesting the Bill. The first ever mobile sms petition will roll out during this week allowing millions of Kenyans from all over the country to take part .   Please join us on this online petition and support the Kenyan people and environment!

Your Excellency, Please put environmental considerations at the TOP of your agenda. Without proper landscape planning and resource management for a sustainable future in Kenya, the years ahead will be increasingly impoverished and bleak. Think carefully when planning for our future, and avoid the mistakes of others. Please don't sign the Biosafety Bill until it has been re-drafted and taken the voice of Kenyan farmers into consideration.

Please respect your farmers, who shall work independently, with their own seeds; and shall not become dependent to foreign food industry; - the head is round, so that you can change thinking into other directions !!-

Mr Kibabi, Insist on more research on this GM produce. We need a case study from other countries, we may be undergoing food security issues but we are not guinea pigs, so don't make us a nation of guinea pigs.

Your Excellency, this is to appeal to you to carefully reconsider the biosafety bill. Current advances in technology and agriculture are truly changing the way in which farming is carried out worldwide. To date, most of these developments have been part of the large commercial agricultural sphere. Most of the new developments are meant for mechanised commercial farming and not for rural subsistence agriculture. Most farming in Kenya remains in the hands of rural, subsistence systems and is very much based on a diversity of species and farming practices. This is as much a part of Kenya's rich heritage as our national parks, forests and cultures. In addition, Kenya is the centre of diversity for cultivated species such as 'kunde' (cowpea) and therefore we should do our best to protect these vast genetic resources for both current and future generations. Indeed we do need a biosafety and laws surrounding our seeds and crops, but this should be based on protection and support for farmers and our existing rich diversity rather than a benefiting a few profit-making corporations.

Mr. President, this technology is NOT properly tested and there are far too many well documented doubts surrounding the safety and general wisdom of genetically modifying food chain organisms. Kenya is already blessed with a natural agricultural health and to introduce such measures is courting long-term catastrophe. Please, for the sake of your beautiful country and people seek proper advice, from those who do NOT stand to reap massive personal financial gain, before blundering into what otherwise has the potential to become an irreversible human disaster. That will be your legacy.

As a country we believe food and access to healthcare, and thus good health, are basic rights. If we are flooded with GMOs we are not safeguarding either of these rights. Let us look critically at this Bill and do what is best as opposed to what is fast

GMO products could cause damage in your country ~ you may want to study this more before you sign the Biosafety Bill 2008. Your Minister of Agriculture could be a little lax on his job ~ we certainly have seen that in the US under Pres. Bush where ministers just have not done their jobs. Hope that is not the case for you.
