STOP THE MONKEY FARM IN PUERTO RICO

STOP THE MONKEY FARM IN PUERTO RICO

Target:
10,000
Sponsored by:
Oppose Puerto Rico's Plan for a Massive Primate Breeding Facility

Join an international coalition of attorneys, scientists, and animal advocates in opposing the proposed construction of a massive facility in Puerto Rico for the purpose of breeding primates for use in painful and traumatic laboratory experiments.

The proposed facility in Guayama City will, according to plans, breed many thousands of highly intelligent, sensitive macaques for export to research facilities in the United States and around the world, and potentially for on-site and/or local experimentation as well.

Let Puerto Rican officials know you are part of the international opposition to this cruel plan!

Such a facility would place Puerto Rico behind the curve in the current context of scientific debate about laboratory research involving live animals. In 2007, the National Academy of Sciences published a report calling on the Environmental Protection Agency to make a fundamental shift in its toxicity testing strategies away from testing on mammals and focusing increasingly on new, more accurate, not to mention, more ethical in vitro toxicity testing.

this is rediculous. if puerto ricans that live on the island found out about this they wouldnt allow it. i used to live there and such facilities were not wanted on the island. the person who is in charge of this protest should contact the news papers over there

Animal abuse is an increasing problem among our nation, and its your job to put an end to it. You may not think your signature counts but it DOES and if we all pull together this inhumanity will someday come to a hault.Until then all we can do is PRAY and get INVOLVED. Thank you and good luck with the petition.

Such arrogance! Clean up your act before you propose to build a facility for the purpose of breeding thousands of primates. Due to your history of negligence, poor oversight, control and follow-up, Puerto Rico now has a problem with wild, non-native and dangerously viral monkeys, descendants of your lab monkeys which now endangers the lives of our citizens. Have you forgotten the origins of Yellow Fever and Malaria! How dare you bring these monkeys to our tropical island where mosquitos are likely to become vectors of unknown diseases. Why don't you use your funds to clean up your previous mess and collect all the monkeys that you left behind as well as their offspring that are currently running wild and spay and neuter them. STRICT CONTROL MUST BE ENFORCED IN ORDER TO PREVENT A FUTURE CATASTROPHE AND ALL INGREDIENTS THAT CULMINATES IN A POTENTIAL EPIDEMIC MUST BE EXPOSED AND ERADICATED. WE WILL NOT AND MUST NOT ALLOW PUERTO RICO TO BECOME YOUR NEW AFRICA!!! LET'S NIP THIS IN THE BUD RIGHT NOW AND FIGHT FOR UNCONDITIONAL CLEANUP! ps will the next person please translate this in Spanish--gracias!

This is business at its worst. They see that it costs X amount of money to procure monkeys for labs currently, determine they can make a profit by centralizing the whole process (for a less amount than X), market it to a country’s politians with promises of economic enrichment, and try to ignore the holes in their chests where their hearts used to be. Stopping the Demand is the only true cure for this phenomenon. Let's begin by halting this facility here. Using animals for research (no matter the goal) is far below the standard we should hold ourselves to as humans. Nevermind the fact that I don't think Puerto Rico wants to be known as the travel destination to boycott due to their disgusting monkey concentration camp. Glorimari Jaime, the mayor, is on board-- that's one politician that gets it, how about some more (Governor Fortuno we're looking at you)?

There are so many other more effective and more accurate alternative methods for this type of research available today. The minor benefits of this type of research on live animals is far outweighed by the cost of the intense suffering they are subjected to. This is unnecessary and unacceptable. Puerto Rico and all pharmaceutical companies involved in this project should be ashamed of themselves for even considering such an atrocity.

Since Puerto Rico is a United States territory, then ALL citizens of the U.S. have a right to oppose this horrific proposal. When will this senseless cruelty to animals end? I say BAN all TOURISM to PUERTO RICO if approval to build this nightmare comes to fruition. And THANK YOU TO BENICIO DEL TORO for putting a famous face on this issue.
