Stop War on Coyotes in Nova Scotia

  • by: Save our Wildlife
  • recipient: Darrell Dexter, Premier of the Province of Nova Scotia

The Nova Scotia government has declared war on coyotes, implementing a $20 bounty for professional trappers. Natural Resources Minister John MacDonell claims it is not a bounty to cut populations but rather to instill wariness of humans in coyotes. However, government's goal is to cut coyote populations by 50%.

Government claims aggressive coyotes will be targeted, however, traps are indiscriminate - they will also trap non-aggressive coyotes as well as household pets.

Coyotes  and wolves are key to thriving ecosystems. But state plans seem more focused on eradication than ecologically balanced wildlife populations.

These animals caught in cruel traps and face a painful death.

Dear Mr. Dexter

It has come to my attention that the Nova Scotia government has determined to hunt and slaughter coyotes, in an effort to achieve "wariness of humans" in coyotes. I am therefore requesting you provide immediate relief on behalf of the non-human animals so callously and brutally attacked and savagely killed. I understand that to establish endorsement, pro-killing enthusiasts and supporters exaggerate potentially dangerous situations and exploit community fear, dispelling any measures to protect wildlife. Indeed, the human animal is deceptively clever and duplicitous in gaining support for the vicious killing of non-human animals.

Please allow me to illustrate a few concerns demonstrative of this flawed killing plan. Ecologically, populations will fluctuate according to conditions and naturally-occurring food sources; it is the interference of humans that causes imbalance. To blame and slaughter the coyotes for human encroachment is both irresponsible and unjustified. Furthermore, killing coyotes would artificially increase food supplies to the remaining coyotes, the consequence of which would be increased reproduction and an ensuing greater rebound population. In fact, studies have demonstrated that the continual cycle of hunting is responsible for larger populations in subsequent years. Additionally, contrary to your assertions of targeting "aggressive" coyotes, your plan of trapping them will only succeed in trapping any animal victims, non-coyotes and companion animals included. Furthermore, the proclamation of attempting to effect an instinctual hesitancy in coyotes towards humans is absolutely inane. It is preposterous to claim behavioural instincts and traits can be modified by using traps, absent human intervention during the trapping moment.

Hunting, including trapping, is inherently cruel, yet these hunts are particularly savage, fundamentally brutal, and based on inequity and accommodating promoters, those who support pro-killing responding to fabricated situations. As such, it is impossible to contemplate supporting any country, via tourism or commerce, that excuses such blatant animal cruelty; as a direct consequence you should understand that any killing will prove not only socially unacceptable but also financially irresponsible due to personal boycotts. I again request that, based on the established brutality involved of killing, you adopt non-killing tactics to address any concerns with coyotes and be a representation of animal compassion and strive to foster an ideal whereby animals are respected and empathized by your citizens.

I hope this letter finds you willing to scrutinize both your own involvement in the intentional exploitation of animals and your desire to therefore protect, rather than harm, them. Thank you for your attention to this urgent issue.

sincerely
