Tell Obama to Steer the Stimulus Package

Obama ran for president on a platform that promised oversight and steering of the economy, promising to bring the US economy into the 21st Century with clean energy, new technologies in transportation of people and goods, and global leadership in a vision for how to live in a sustainable way. These goals will not be achieved without planning, both national and regional.
The current stimulus package discussions do not seem to include incentives for states and municipalities to provide state, regional and city transportation plans that offer significant reductions in greenhouse gases, as well as a grid that incorporates renewable energy sources. What are being called "green jobs" are in reality simply traditional sector jobs, and there is a danger that the lion's share of the stimulus funds will be spent on simply repairing and adding to the existing highways, bridges and other roadway infrastructure.
If this happens, the opportunity to enter the 21st Century in energy and transportation will have been squandered. The administration needs to provide the leadership and demand of Congress that these funds not be dispersed without strings, namely that states cannot fill their budget gaps by using these funds without first raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans, and that they implement plans to move towards clean transportation and energy alternatives.

We need to utilize everything in out power to reduce our dependence on foreign oil including using our own natural resources.OPEC will continue to cut production until they achieve their desired 80-100. per barrel. The high cost of fuel this past year seriously damaged our economy and society. Oil is finite. We are using oil globally at the rate of 2X faster than new oil is being discovered. We need to take some of these billions in bail out bucks and bail ourselves out of our dependence on foreign oil. Jeff Wilson has a really good new book out called The Manhattan Project of 2009 Energy Independence Now. He explores our uses of oil besides gasoline, our depletion, out reserves and stores as well as viable options to replace oil.Oil is finite, it will run out in the not too distant future. WE need to take some of these billions in bail out bucks and bail America out of it's dependence on foreign oil. The historic high price of gas this past year did serious damage to our economy and society. WE should never allow others to have that much power over our economy again. Without a national leadership on environmentally progressive economic investment and technology deployment, Obama's vision of an economy based on green jobs will not come about. Local activism and organizing cannot produce a plan for a national transportation grid, nor can it divert funds to develop such a plan. This is the function of federal govenment, and the Obama administration needs to assume that role.
