Legalization of Marijuana

US Policy on Drugs

Driven by the Drug War, the U.S. prison population is six to ten times as high as most Western European nations. The United States is a close second only to Russia in its rate of incarceration per 100,000 people. In 2000, more than 734,000 people were arrested in this country for marijuana-related offenses alone.

The US war on drugs places great emphasis on arresting people for smoking marijuana. Since 1990, nearly 5.9 million Americans have been arrested on marijuana charges, a greater number than the entire populations of Alaska, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming combined. In 2000, state and local law enforcement arrested 734,498 people for marijuana violations. This is an increase of 800 percent since 1980, and is the highest ever recorded by the FBI.

As has been the case throughout the 1990s, the overwhelming majority of those charged with marijuana violations in 2000-- 646,042 Americans (88 %) -- were for simple possession. The remaining 12% (88,456 Americans) were for "sale/manufacture", an FBI category which includes marijuana grown for personal use or purely medical purposes. These new FBI statistics indicate that one marijuana smoker is arrested every 45 seconds in America. Taken together, the total number of marijuana arrests for 2000 far exceeded the combined number of arrests for violent crimes, including murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

Like most Americans, people who smoke marijuana also pay taxes, love and support their families, and work hard to make a better life for their children. Suddenly they are arrested, jailed and treated like criminals solely because of their recreational drug of choice. State agencies frequently step in and declare children of marijuana smokers to be "in danger", and many children are placed into foster homes as a result. This causes enormous pain, suffering and financial hardship for millions of American families. It also engenders distrust and disrespect for the law and for the criminal justice system overall. Responsible marijuana smokers present no threat or danger to America or its children, and there is no reason to treat them as criminals, or to take their children away. As a society we need to find ways to discourage personal conduct of all kinds that is abusive or harmful to others. Responsible marijuana smokers are not the problem and it is time to stop arresting them.

Once all the facts are known, it becomes clear that America's marijuana laws need reform. This issue must be openly debated using only the facts. Groundless claims, meaningless statistics, and exaggerated scare stories that have been peddled by politicians and prohibitionists for the last 60 years must be rejected.

We should legaiize marijuana, it would reduce arrests in the united states and save the tax payers money. Mostly, it would help people with cancer,MS and other illness to live a comfortable life free from pain

Marijuana should be legalized, and not just for people who have cancer, hiv, etc. It should be available to everyone. It helps people who have pain, glaucoma, anxiety, depression and it helps with eating disorders. The list could go on and on. Alcohol serves no purpose other than to get a "BUZZ" on. It does not have any type of medicinal purpose. If anything, alcohol contributes to bad health. Alcohol has killed so many people. I have never saw on the news that said someone operated a motor vehicle under the influence of marijuana and killed someone. Everytime I turn on the tv I hear of someone killed by a drunk driver. People under the influence of alcohol make bad decisions, they get attitudes, and want to fight, etc. When you smoke marijuana you usually do not make bad decisions, and you become more passive than aggressive and try to avoid conflict. We pot smokers cause no one harm to ourselves or to anyone else. We live normal lives. I feel that marijuana should be legalized, as it comes from the earth, not a bunch of chemicals. I have encouraged, and will encourage my children to stay away from the alcohol, and if they want to try marijuana we could arrange for them to try it under supervision for the first time user. I feel like young adults have been targets for sex, as the they have a couple of drinks and our considered "loose", then someone tries to take advantage of them. If you were under the influence of marijuana you would be able to defend yourself and get yourself out of the situation. You do not become "impaired from marijuana, like you in any way shape or form do from alcohol. It amazes me that alcohol is legal and marijuana isn't. This tells me that the people in our government have no idea what they are talking about. They have all smoked it, but choose to lie about it. It would, in my opinion, help the economy by bringing in new jobs and circulation of more money, especially in hard hit areas. Its about time we all stand up for our rights and get marijuana legalized! We have nothing to lose and alot to gain if we could have the chance to prove that marijuana is not just to get "HIGH".

Legalize it, tax it, and start growing hemp crops again...save our soil and our trees!! Marijuana is less dangerous than chemical opiates that the drug companies are pushing! Also, retting hemp requires no chemicals and is therefore better for the air. Plus, it doesn't require pesticides. You can use it for food, cloth, paper, fuel...the list goes on. It just makes sense!

If you really think about it, and look at the facts, this country would be nuts to keep marijuana illegal. Let's make some change.

"Like every great religion of the past we seek to find the divinity within and to express this revelation in a life of glorification and the worship of God. These ancient goals we define in the metaphor of the present — turn on, tune in, drop out." "Turn on' meant go within to activate your neural and genetic equipment. Become sensitive to the many and various levels of consciousness and the specific triggers that engage them. Drugs were one way to accomplish this end. 'Tune in' meant interact harmoniously with the world around you - externalize, materialize, express your new internal perspectives. Drop out suggested an elective, selective, graceful process of detachment from involuntary or unconscious commitments. 'Drop Out' meant self-reliance, a discovery of one's singularity, a commitment to mobility, choice, and change. Unhappily my explanations of this sequence of personal development were often misinterpreted to mean 'Get stoned and abandon all constructive activity" Timothy Leary. I don't want to live in a world where spiritual and personal development are endeavors not free to pursue. Legalizing Marijuana, is one small step towards freedom.

In my opinion marijuana is as safe as alcohol, especialy strong drink and should be legalized nationwide. It is not a stepping stone to harsher drugs contrary to popular belief and if eaten is as safe as asprin. It does not have side affects of other drugs when quitting unlike many drugs prescribed by your doctor. Coffee has worse side affects than marijuana. The opinion of marijauna which our parents and their parents have, has been greatly misconstrued by propaganda made popular many years ago which we today now consider pure fabrication. Let the facts speak for thierself. We are adults not children and deserve the respect as any law abiding citizen. We are not criminals!!!!!!!
# 196:

lets face facts here, marijuana should be legalized. Why? because you cannot overdose on it, it can be used for medicinal purposes, and if the goverment makes it legal and taxes it our government can make billions of more dollars instead of spending billions of dollars trying to keep it illegal and off the streets which obviously isn't working to say the least. So legalize it so we can make money as a country and so our police can focus on harder drugs. and i am 16 years old writing about this

For 18 years I've been smoking weed. In this time I have robbed no one, crashed no vehicles, rapped no one, murdered no one. Its Really ironic that the leading killer in the U.S. happens to be two substances regulated and taxed by the government ( Alcohol and tobacco). Never in my life have I ever even so much as heard of someone getting stoned and robbing a pharmacy or gas station. I'm really sick of the hipocracy. Get your head out of your asses. I shouldn't be treated as a criminal for enjoying something safer than alcohol or tobacco. I go to work everyday, I support my family, I pay my taxes, and I smoke weed everyday. How does this affect you? Oh I'm supporting cartels and terrorism. Well the government created situation also. Now you can fix Idiots!
# 191:

If alcohol is legally regulated marijuana should be too. If you take the criminal element away marijuana use will be much safer & the USA will make money on taxes/fees.

I think we, USA, should legalize marijuana because I'm tired of paying taxes for people to stay in jail for a petty crime of wanting to smoke at joint. I rather pay taxes to keep murders and child molesters in jail. Besides how many people die from overdosing on weed? None! Besides if weed is such a harmful drug, then we, USA, need to make aspirin illegal!

not only is weed a way for people who are sick to feel better, but the bi-product hemp can change the world and possibly eliminate much of the pollution that is occuring everyday due to plastics, and everything else. Why exactly do we have weed illegal because our government knows that it can benefit us, and who has it ever hurt... cant think of anyone well ill tell you why its because more people die from alcohol and cigrettes than weed, wait more people die from natural causes, wait even better more people die from choking themselves than. SO whats the harm in legalizing weed, there is none

This is not a harmfull drug drinking is not better for you if not worse. It would help are ecomony and people would be happier buy more stuff businesses would benifit. People have been smoking it for a long time. They are not going to stop anytime soon. It would cut down crime. LEGALIZE! The End.

For the sake of our children and grandchildren this must be addressed and looked at from a non political way. Our forefathers grew hemp and were proud of it. The farms have lost a crop, this could save the small rural farms, the enviorment, and millons of lifes, and feed many starving here in our own country and throughout the world. This concept is so simple there has to be big politics behind the lack of sense. Perhaps the big chemical, oil and lumber companies come into play, perhaps even the medical system and drug system. The people of the United States need and are ready for change, please hear our plea and work for we the people again. To World Peace

I hate taking man made drugs for anxiety, migraines and sleep disorder, with the next day hangovers that they leave. This is such a simple cure. Please legalize nature's own. I'll pay taxes if I can buy it legally, no problem. It can even make money for the state of NC!! (PLEASE LET THEM KNOW THIS!!!) If anything, ban alcohol!!! Now that's a killer!!!

Medicinal Marijuana has helped my husband for 3 years now, his back pain is relieved, his mental health is improved. Now he is legal in CA however if we wish to travel out of state to visit family he either has to illegally carry it or find some one on the street illegally distributing it. This is asinine and ridiculous. If I have a prescription for oxycotton (sp) I can travel with it and its a MUCH more horrible drug than Marijuana OR Alcohol! I believe the first thing we need to do in order to get this drug legalized is first request that it be changed from a schedule one drug... Eric Holder needs to get on this first and foremost!

I suffer from mood disorders and have terrible headaches. The doctors prescribe "legal" medications with side effects three pages long. I don't think people need to become stoners, as I don't believe people should become drunks. On the other hand, tobacco is the true gateway drug, and everyone knows it is a killer, but it is legal. I do believe if people can be helped by this plant, it should not be against the law.

We need to stop ruining peoples futures and families by arresting and sending to them jail for a mere marijuana possesion. This "drug" is so horrible,I mean it makes you happy, mellow, hungry, relieves tension and stress and if you have some medical issue it can actually make you feel better. Where is the problem!!?? I"m a 35 year old woman who suffers from back problems and due to other medical issues i have loss of appetite and smoking marijuana helps control those problems. SO LEGALIZE MARIJUANA SO MY LIFE ISN'T JEOPARDIZED JUST BECAUSE I NEED RELIEF.

zero deaths, compared to the rest its obvious marijuana should no longer be ilegal. Besides how can the government decide a natural growing plant should be ilegal the whole idea is wrong and unconstitutional, for someone to tell me I cant do something that is all around way less harmful then tobacco and alcohol is stupid. Im sure our founding fathers would even agree to this.

Hemp would be a great way to fight global warming. It stores carbon quickly, as an annual plant, and it can be used for stop forest destruction for paper, and fiber for clothing and many other applications. Why sites like Care2 have not promoted this aspect of its legalization is shameful!!
