The last time a cure was found for a disease was 1959. Dr. Johas Salk Developed the vaccine for polio. He was just one man. Since that time, hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on disease. Not for a cure, but for drug treatment only. A cure would put big pharmaceutical companies out of business.
It should be the job of a physician to prescribe the best treatments to a patient, instead of patients asking doctors to prescribe these drugs to them. By advertising these drugs, the pharmaceutical companies are involving themselves in a legal drug trade that is killing thousands of people every day. Many of these drugs, such as Chantix, Floxin, and Viagra have proven deadly. It is time this unethical marketing ceases.

Statistics prove prescription drugs are 16,400% more deadly than terrorists. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 1998, a report finds that prescription drugs kill about 106,000 Americans each year %u2013 that%u2019s three times as many as are killed by automobiles%u2014making prescription drug death the fourth leading killer after heart disease, cancer and stroke.
Last year, the Journal of the American Medical Association puts death from all drugs, illegal and prescription, second only behind car accidents as a cause of death.
The rise in deaths coincides with the direct marketing of prescription medication to the public. Prescription drug sales have soared nearly 500 percent since 1990.
The pharmaceutical industry is a multi-trillion dollar business. Companies spend billions on advertising and promotions for prescription drugs. Pharmaceutical companies claim their drug ads are "educational" to the public. The public seems to genuinely believe that drugs advertised on TV are safe, in spite of the plethora of side effects listed. Many of these drugs have proven deadly.

The White House Office of National Drug Control policy had been planning to unveil an ad campaign to target prescription drug abuse by teens. It is time to stop this form of advertising by the pharmaceutical companies.

These commercials aren't helping. We might as well let cigarette companies advertise as well.
I'm a life and health insurance agent in California and I'm truly disgusted by the drug ads on national television. The prescription ads need to stop. Do you know what the first prescription drug ad was that made millions of dollars and opened the door for television drug ads?? Claridon prescription drug allergy medications with Joan London as host to those commercials made their way into national advertisment campaigns to the American home in the 90's... the drug company made millions...probably billions on the Claridon prescription drug and THAT OPENED THE DOOR FOR THE DRUG COMPANIES IN AMERICA.... from the prescription drug ads for allergies, the drug companies SQUEEZED IN AND went from there to cholestoral medications, viagra, high blood pressure medication, acid reflux medications and on and on and THE WORST AND ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS prescriptions sold through advertisements on TV... NOW is anti-depressant medication! WAKE UP AMERICA!!! THE DRUG COMPANIES WANT US TO BE PILL POPPING CRAZY PARONOID NUT HEADS...DOCTORS ARE NOT STOPPING THESE ADS, THE DRUG COMPANIES ARE NOT STOPPING THESE DRUG ADS, OUR GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO STOP THESE DRUG COMPANIES!!! THEY ARE TRYING TO BRAINWASH YOU THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! I have family from Europe that when they visit AMERICA are shocked and horrified that the American government allows the drug companies to sell prescription drugs on national television. I, as a health insurance agent in California constantly discuss with uninsurable people, people who are looking to get health insurance, people who because they are taking an anti-depressant that they saw in a TV commercial and then they told they're Doctor about the AD they saw on TV, now believe they need to take the advertised drug, ...AND CAN NOW, WITH TAKING THE DRUG, CAN NOT GET MAJOR MEDICAL INSURANCE and are UNINSURABLE. NO WHERE IN THE ADS DOES IT SAY BY TAKING THIS DRUG IT COULD AFFECT YOUR INSURABILITY OR YOUR ABILITY TO GET INSURANCE, all the time these people, who were sold or were bought into self prescribing a prescription drug. The advertising marketing gurus know what they are doing and they're goals are to SELL PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION TO THE PUBLIC, MAKE THE VIEWER BELIEVE THEY NEED THE DRUG, SO THE TV VIEWER SELF PRESCRIBES THE MEDICATION BY ASKING THEIR DOCTOR... "Hey Doc I've been feeling sad, lonely, a little depressed, I SAW THE AD FOR THAT DRUG ON TV CAN YOU GET ME SOME, A PRESCRIPTION OF THAT DRUG, IT LOOKS LIKE IT MAY WORK FOR ME??" THE DOCTOR THEN WILLINGLY PRESCRIBES THE DRUG, PRESCRIBES DRUG TO THEIR PATIENT, AND OF COURSE THE DOCTOR AGREES BECAUSE THEY MAKE MONEY EVERYTIME A PRESCRIPTION DRUG IS PRESCRIBED TO A PATIENT AND THEIR CASH REGISTER RINGS AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND IT'S A Vicious circle over and over again. TV ADVERTISEMENTS SUGGEST US ALWAYS to buy a pizza, a car, a soft drink, a piece of jewerly, a clothing, a computer, an electronic item, a certain restaurant, a vacation, a fast food joint, all by TAPPING INTO PEOPLES EMOTIONS THROUGH THE POWER OF SUGGESTIONS AND MAKING PEOPLE BELEIVE THEY NEED TO TAKE A PRESCRIPTION DRUG ...only in this case, people are being sold prescription drugs, that could be dangerous, that are in many cases can kill people, causing many people to suffer serious health problems, and very importantly insurance benefit rate increases in their healthcare by any major carrier in the US or in most cases being DECLINED ALL TOGETHER BY AN INSURANCE COMPANY FOR BENEFITS! Self-diagnosis and requesting prescription drugs by name based on a commercial you saw on television would be humourous, were it not true and happening at an alarming rate in the United States and Canada. More regulation of drug ads, please.
Advertising for prescription drugs show one, potentially dangerous, way to ease symptoms of our problems. If we spent as much on Public Awareness ads that focused on getting exercise, healthy living, and support for mental illness, we would address the causes of these problems instead of promoting expensive symptom relievers.
I am sick of these commercials. I don't want to hear about erectile dysfunction, bladder problems, depression etc and then have to listen to the side effects...take your drugs and shove them...
I believe that drug advertising needs to stop. It is the dr that needs to prescibe the drug not the drug company. And drs need to stop being paid by the drug companies. They are corrupt. Why do we spend billions on medicine but we cant find a cure for cancer, kidney disease, etc. That is what they want to do. We need stem cell approved and put the drug company down from being greedy. We dont need them. Stop the corruption from the drug company and the FDA and you "Congress" is just as corrupt as the drug company. I am tired of it.

Alot of the medication advertised is not even necessary and alot is even dangerous. Shame on the FDA for allowing the sale of such medications. Even the over-the-counter meds can pose health risks. Consider the FDAs undying devotion to aspartame. You think they are interested in anyone's health?

If a doctor prescribes a medication that has been advertised on radio or TV, I ask for an alternate.
