Ask Hendry County Officials to Reevaluate Zoning of Primate Lab Due to Ongoing Violations

Please sign and share this petition in an effort to encourage the Hendry County Officials to reevaluate their zoning laws and permits for the breeding facility for thousands of monkeys. We need them to either revoke their permit or hold a public meeting while investigating before the facility is allowed to move forward. This place has a past history of animal welfare violations and outbreaks of infectious disease, yet they are still in business!

A breeding facility for thousands of monkeys in the Florida area has a history of animal welfare violations and breeding in situations of infectious disease outbreaks such as Ebola. Without holding any public meetings, Hendry County, Florida approved plans and permits for this breeding facility that is reportedly going to take in about 3,200 long-tailed macaques from the island of Mauritius for the purpose of breeding and selling them to labs for experimentation purposes.

In light of the fact that this facility was a secretive operation for imported wild African monkeys who are vulnerable to outbreaks of exotic infectious disease, Hendry County authorities need to revoke their permits and stop their abusive methods to all these monkeys. It was reported that 80 to 90 percent of the animals suffered hair loss due to stress of their environment. Many of these animals are kept in enclosures that are poorly-lit with brown waste splattered on the walls. The enclosures had a horrible build-up of fecal matter waste, cobwebs, hair, food and grime. Since the crates are stacked, monkeys below sustain urination and fecal matter from those above. Because of infectious disease within the facility, they were found to be in noncompliance for providing quarantine rooms protocols so that diseases do not spread.

All local residents, public leaders, legal advocates such as the Animal Legal Defense Fund and groups like the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida are all looking to be a part of the decision-making process. Help us in our efforts to encourage the Hendry County authorities to reevaluate the zoning of this monkey breeding facility through public meetings with all concerned to determine whether this place should have its permits revoked. Keeping this place running is a health hazard for the animals and the community; stop the abuse of these monkeys and allow the community a chance to be heard. Thank you for your support by signing and sharing this petition everywhere.

Florida Hendry County Authorities - You need to thoroughly investigate this monkey breeding facility to determine whether they should be shut down and their permit revoked. The animals are living in horrific conditions, many are ill with diseases that spreads throughout the building, presenting a threat to the local community. Such a situation should include all local residents, public leaders, legal advocates such as the Animal Legal Defense Fund and groups like the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida in a public meeting so they can be an active part of the decision-making process. Stop the abuse of the animals and the outbreak of disease that is threatening the area. The facility should not be granted a permit, the animals need to be removed and cared for properly.
