Save Amur Leopards!

Amur leopards, which range across parts of China and Russia, are perfect predators. They can run thirty-seven miles an hour and jump nineteen feet in the air.

But the Amur leopard's amazing talents haven't saved these incredible big cats from declining to the very brink of extinction. In fact, only about 57 Amur leopards now remain in the wild.

These beautiful and solitary cats are mercilessly hunted for their gorgeous pelts. Though trafficking in wildlife is largely illegal, unlawful poachers continue to kill and skin the Amur while taking their chances with detection and arrest.

International cooperation is absolutely necessary to keep these rare cats from disappearing forever. Russia has taken some steps to protect the Amur leopard, but more needs to be done to save this species. Collaborating with the government of China on a transnational rescue plan for Amur leopards could very well save these magnificent animals from extinction.

Will you help me let the governments of Russia and China know that the world is counting on them to save Amur leopards? If enough of us speak out for these rare cats, we can secure the action needed to protect them from poaching, habitat destruction and other threats.

Please join me in asking the governments of Russia and China to establish a Sino-Russian transboundary nature reserve.

Dear Vladimir Putin and Li Keqiang:

The Amur leopard is an amazing animal. It would be a terrible loss if it were to go extinct due to illegal hunting. It is hardly the leopard's fault that his skin is so beautiful and considered, erroneously by some, to be an appropriate fashion accessory. While I appreciate that both Russia and China have take important recent steps to protect native wildlife, I urge you to take a further step and create a safe haven for the Amur leopard. Please establish a Sino-Russian transboundary nature reserve in the Amur's range.
