Indonesia: take action to prevent more massive forest fires!

Devastating forest fires in Indonesia in 2015 which unleashed dangerous quantities of CO2 into our fragile atmosphere were condemned as a ''crime against humanity.''

The fires raged for several months, engulfing Indonesia and surrounding countries in dangerous fumes. Given the extent of local and global impact, not enough is being done to prevent another forest fire catastrophe.

Please sign this petition to demand that Indonesia takes action by increasing spending on fire prevention, and committing to holding all companies responsible both legally and financially for any fires.

Indonesia has one of the highest global rates of deforestation and forest degradation. It is also one of the world's top three greenhouse gas emitters. This is in large part thanks to land use change and fires on carbon-rich peat land. The country has committed to a 26% reduction in 'business as usual' emissions by 2020, but is failing to take the tough action required.

WWF-Indonesia’s deputy director, Irwan Gunawan, says  government action is not enough and “has not yet resulted in deterrent effect to prevent any recurrence”.

Please sign this petion asking that Indonesia commit to curbing forest fires through legal, financial and practical controls. Climate change is a global issue of immediate urgency, and all countries must play their part to ensure a future for humanity. Together we can push our leaders to take responsibility and cut emissions.

The President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo:

I am writing today to urge you to take action to prevent future forest fires.

With humanity facing an existential threat in the form of climate change, it is the responsibility of all countries to curb their CO2 emissions at a rate that reflects the urgency of the situation.

Another out-of-control fire on a similar scale would be disastrous for the global community.
