ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- More than a dozen animal crates were found off the side of two roads in Rockingham County Wednesday morning with the bodies of decomposing cats inside.

Just before 6 a.m., employees with the Public Works Department found six animal carriers and a plastic bin on the side of a service road near Old Covered Bridge Road, according to investigators with the Madison Police Department.

The bodies of seven decomposing cats were inside along with feces, newspaper, and rotting cat food.

“The animals had been very decomposed which leads you to believe they had been dead for several months,” said Det. Tim Handy, a criminal investigator for Madison police.

Around 11:30 a.m., a park ranger found four more cats inside crates dumped on U.S. 220 Business near Janet Road in Mayodan.

Feces, animal bowls and cat food were also food inside.

Investigators believe the cases are connected.
