STOP GUN AND AMMUNITION SALES AT A FAMILY FESTIVAL IN NAROOMA NSW AUSTRALIA

Take 2 or 3 paragraphs to describe this issue to readers: why it’s important, and why they should sign.

NAROOMA IS A BEAUTIFUL, IDYLLIC SEASIDE TOWN ON THE FAR SOUTH COAST OF NSW. WE DON’T WANT GUNS ON SALE IN OUR MAIN STREET IN A FESTIVAL ATMOSPHERE. WE DON’T WANT TO GLORIFY THE KILLING OF ANIMALS AS A FUN FAMILY ACTIVITY. WE DON’T WANT OUR YOUTH HAVING GUNS PROMOTED AS THE DESIRABLE THING TO OWN.

In 2013 a HuntFest was given approval in our town. Council did this without public consultation and knowing many who live here were opposed. After just one year the organisers applied to council to be able to display guns. Not to sell them. Again no public consultation was held despite masses of phone calls, letters, emails etc. Councillors had never received such antagonism to a community event. Three councillors listened to their community and opposed the decision but they were outnumbered. Permission was granted, subject to an arms fair permit being granted. The organisers had been well- advised and their application met the requirements, so the licensing sergeant gave approval. Hunting enthusiasts converged on the Narooma Huntfest in 2014 –whilst many locals kept their heads down or went elsewhere for the weekend. Locals are relaxed people – not use to public demonstrations or protests.

BUT NOW, the organisers have finally admitted their original intention and applied for a full arms fair permit. To sell guns and ammunition in our community centre in the main street of town. And to have a mobile shooting range.

Submissions close 8th October so this is really urgent! Please sign this petition and if you have time send a brief submission

Dear Dr Dale, Mayor Brown and councillors,

Reference Number - E12.6277

We are opposed to the addition of guns and ammunition being made available for sale at the Huntfests held in Narooma on the June long weekend for the next 3 years. Guns may be neccessary for some people but we do not feel they should be sold in a festival environment. We believe that encouraging children to desire guns and to go shooting is not in keeping with our modern society. We urge you not to grant approval to this amendment to the Huntfest license.
