Rescue Phevos the Tiger!

  • by: Lions, Tigers & Bears

Phevos the tiger was seized from an Italian circus in 2002. Phevos has been living alone in his enclosure at the Trikala Zoo, outside Athens, Greece since March of this year when his longtime tiger companion, Athena, died due to medical neglect from a gaping wound on her paw that knowingly went untreated for six months.

Lions, Tigers & Bears (LTB) - an accredited exotic animal rescue in San Diego County, California - has offered to provide Phevos a permanent home at their sanctuary. LTB is now waiting on the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to permit Phevos move and rescue - a process that has been drawn out over the last four months without avail.

Phevos' rescue depends on this permit - But time is of the essence! Phevos needs to be rescued before the onset of winter. Once winter strikes, it will make his journey too dangerous, leaving Phevos in his deplorable prison cell for another season.

We need your voice and your support to show the USFWS/Division of Management Authority that the cards are in their hand.  The fate of Phevos lies within their decision to issue this permit immediately. It is a matter of life and death for this innocent tiger.

Please sign this petition to show the USFWS/Division of Management Authority- Branch of Permits that you support Phevos' rescue. Thank you for your support!

More information:

Bengal tigers are listed under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). CITES was enacted in 1975 to "ensure international trade in plants and animals does not threaten their survival in the wild", however, Phevos is captive born and is technically a generic tiger (a tiger of no pure genetic lineage), not a Bengal- this technicality is the cause of delay for LTB's timely receipt of this necessary permit to bring Phevos to safety.

CITES requires we prove that by importing Phevos, it does not threaten tiger populations in the wild and also that we demonstrate our support for global tiger conservation efforts.

As an educational facility, it is, and always has been our mission to educate the public on the importance of global tiger conservation efforts due to the increasing perils these apex predators face in the wild. We also support global efforts to save wild tiger populations and have offered our knowledge on the species along with non-invasive genetic, behavioral and health-related information to global conservation efforts.

We have done our part, now we are asking for your help. We need your voice and your support to show the USFWS/Division of Management Authority that the cards are in their hand.  The fate of Phevos lies within their decision to issue this permit immediately. It is a matter of life and death for this innocent tiger.

Please expedite and grant the CITES permit needed to allow Phevos the tiger to move from his deplorable conditions in the Trikala Zoo in Greece to the accredited exotic animal rescue sanctuary of Lions, Tigers & Bears in San Diego County, California. Please act quickly so that Phevos can avoid another dangerous winter in his inhumane solo enclosure.
