Save Red-Legged Frog Habitat

Target:
District of North Vancouver Mayor and Council
On JULY 7, 2008 --(note the date change, once again -- such game playing by our municipality is not responsible governance.)

The plan for mountain bike trails on Fromme Mtn. may be finally be coming to Council, where there is a proposal to build more mountain bike trails, further fragmenting and degrading this ecologically high bio-diverse area.

It is the International Year of the Frog! Save Red-Legged Frog Habitat in the Temperate Rain Forest in BC. See: www.NSwetlandpartners.com
who are in support of this critical habitat, working to conserve wetlands here.

Mountain View Park* wetland area is critical habitat for the Northern Red-Legged Frog in the District of North Vancouver, BC CANADA.

There is no need for the mountain bikers to use this Temperate Rain Forest and wetland park environment, when there are other places for them to use, with very low ecological bio-diversity. Mountain biking sprawls across the North Shore Mountains, uncontained and uncontrolled, for most part.

I have been urging DNV to conserve this park and environs, for several years. Just last year, there was a proper ecological assessment done in the park and elsewhere on Fromme Mtn -- but the proposed plans coming to DNV Council are ignoring the ecological sensitivity of the park and wetland area.

More proposed development for mountain biking recreation will just bring in more wheeled recreational traffic and further threaten this species-at-risk and degrade its habitat.
Unlike what most people think, it is much easier to manage a blanket ban on mountain biking in some areas than  to offer cookie cutter restrictions from some trails.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THIS PETITION!

(I do have a professional biologist's report on the frog, the park and wetland area, beyond, to back up my claims. I have plenty of pictures like the one you see. The District has copies of  the report and pictures also. Please continue to support this petition.  Thank you.)

We the undersigned ask you to please help protect the critical habitat of the Northern Red-Legged Frog inside Mountain View Park, and the area within the Upper Lynn Neighbourhood Catchment.

Please make amendments to change this highly ecological bio-diverse critical habitat  into a Natural Park Zone/"Limited Mountain Recreation Zone", effectively banning mountain biking from it. There are plenty of other areas for mountain bikers to ride. Passive, on foot recreation should only be allowed inside this area. No more trails would need to be built, and more trails could be decommissioned.

By conserving the known species-at-risk,  Northern Red-Legged Frog and it's critical habitat, DNV Mayor and Council will be showing the world they are Environmental Leaders  --  and, thus, will leave a lasting legacy of conservation for future generations to enjoy, -- recognizing the massive conservation efforts to save the frogs around the world during the International Year of the Frog in 2008.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Yes! If something is in danger of becoming extinct; everything should be done to protect this species. The bike trails can be put somewhere else!!!

I agree with Glen. There should be place where mountain bikers can enjoy the great outdoors but it does not have to be at the expense of vulnerable species. Save the Red-legged Frog! Cindy Verbeek BSc.

I believe that there are environmentally sensitive places that need to be protected from Mountain Bike usage, just as there are many places that are ideal for Mt. biking. Getting out in the great outdoors does not mean that there's a need to conquer or thrash it for ones own enjoyment. Glen Carlson, RPBio.

Au point de vue écologique la grenouille est essentielle et naturellement des entreprises polluent leur lieu de vie, il faut sauver absolument ces grenouilles et dépolluer l'endroit!

I am currently advocating for improved protection for Pacific Tree Frogs and other frogs in the Lynnmour Inter-river Area in North Vancouver. We have an increase of both people and dogs to the area and more predicted with developments. Dogs trample through off trail areas in the forest and we found a "Tailed" or a Red-legged Frog there. Did not get a photograph so no positive ID. Good luck and celebrate the year of the frog.
