Stop Using Live Chicks as Packing Peanuts!

Many small poultry breeders who ship live adult birds use male chicks as filler during shipment. Unfortunately, many of these chicks die in transit or shortly after arrival, even if the recipient makes an effort to care for them.

Poultry shippers justify the practice because the live chicks take up extra space in the box and add extra heat. Heat packs would work just as well for these purposes.

Using live chicks as packing material is a cruel practice which often condemns them to a slow and unpleasant death. Please sign the petition to convince the USDA to regulate small poultry breeders and stop the practice of using live chicks as packing peanuts.

Dear United States Department of Agriculture,

We, the undersigned, are concerned with many small poultry breeders' practice of using live male chicks as packing material when shipping live adult birds. Many of these chicks die in transit or shortly after arrival, even if the recipient makes an effort to care for them.

Poultry shippers justify the practice because the live chicks take up extra space in the box and add extra heat. We believe that heat packs would work just as well for these purposes.

Using live chicks as packing material is a cruel practice which often condemns them to a slow and unpleasant death. Please consider regulating small poultry breeders to stop the practice of  using live chicks as packing peanuts. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
