Don't Sack Manchester's Firefighters!

There aren't many prospects more terrifying than being trapped in a fire. A proper fire service to protect our homes, our lives and our loved ones is a necessity, and losing it is a frightening prospect. But now that prospect is becoming a reality for some here in the UK.

Every single frontline firefighter in Manchester is set to be sacked in shocking new plans laid out by Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service managers, who announced they will dismiss all 1,250 front line firefighters. Only those who agree to poorer working conditions, including working 12-hour shifts, will get their jobs back. 250 current posts will simply be slashed.

Please sign this petition to demand that GMFRS do not sack frontline firefighters, and instead work with them to negotiate a safe and fair new contract.

Firefighters in the region are becoming increasingly concerned about the impact of repeated cuts on public safety. The latest proposed cuts come after a huge surge in fire emergencies and related deaths. Figures released by GMFRS show an increase of 140% in all rescues over the last 12 months, alongside an extremely worrying threefold increase in fire deaths.

Our firefighters deserve secure, fair and safe working conditions. The public deserve a properly run and effective fire service. Please sign this petition to show your support for Manchester’s frontline firefighters. If enough of us sign it will be clear to GMFRS that the public stand with the firefighters and want our public servants to be employed in a way that best allows them to continue saving lives.
