The Novato Downtown SMART station has been nearly completed. It will give Novato Three Stations, that will connect three unique neighborhoods to the SMART System.
Currently the Downtown Station is under threat as funds to complete the station are being held by the Novato City Council in a 2:2 vote (Councilmember Eric Lucan is abstaining due to conflicts of interest)
Many opponents mention the lack of parking and dislike with the overall purpose and construction of ANY aspect of SMART, but neither of these pertain to the issue.
In this year, SMART plans to become operational with Phase I of their project stretching from Santa Rosa, thru Novato, to San Rafael. Either way the train will be coming to Novato, the question remains whether we will have two stations or three. With the third station (located in Downtown in the historic train depot) our downtown businesses could attract new customers and our vacant storefronts may be able to attract new businesses. A station platform that has been partially paid for and now remains partially paid for ($1.5 mil I believe) and nonoperational is simply a waste of tax payer dollars.
Please sign this petition and let's finish what we started; let's finish the project that we have worked so hard to build. And let's get on board with giving Novato a head start with THREE operational platforms.
