STOP SLAUGHTERIN WHALES IN TAIJI, JAPAN! - VALAIDEN TEURASTUS SEIS TAIJISSA!

Inherently cruel slaughters of 1940 cetaceans have begun in Taiji, Japan for the season of 2017-2018 despite the strong international criticism and condemnation. During the drive hunts, large groups of dolphins are driven into a cove in order to separated and selected for slaughter or for circuses. It is clear that these inhumane drive hunts would not exist without the involvement of the aquaria industries. The barbaric slaughtering methods are still in use in Taiji, such as pithing, where the live animal is stabbed with a metal spike and “corked” to stop the blood of the animal from staining the water in the killing cove. The killing of dolphins is NOT an ancient or centuries old tradition as has been publicly claimed. Taiji fishermen did not hunt dolphins before 1969. There is no scientific basis for the new increased quota of 1,940 small cetaceans, including two new species of dolphins, as no studies have been carried out to ensure that these populations of cetaceans can sustain the numerous hunts during the period from September 2017 - March 2018. The dolphin meat and blubber has been found to have high levels of mercury, cadmium, the pesticide DDT, and organic contaminants like PCBs. The levels are high enough to pose a health risk for those frequently eating the meat and researchers warn that children and pregnant women shouldn't eat the meat at all. One of the Taiji samples, bought from two local supermarkets, contained almost 16 times more mercury than accepted level of 0.4 parts per million by the Ministry of Health. The same sample also contained 12 times more methyl mercury than is deemed acceptable. We urge you to take immediate action to end the hunting of dolphins in Japan, including the bloody and inhumane slaughter of dolphins that takes place in Taiji. We further encourage you to embrace the real and notable Japanese tradition of deep respect for nature and all its creatures. We also urge you look into humane, sustainable and internationally accepted ways of benefiting from the treasures of Taiji. Vetoomuksen allekirjoittaneena kehotat Japania välittömästi lopettamaan delfiinien ajopyynnit Taijissa.
