Tell Facebook to Delete the "Dog Fighting" Page

  • by: Kelley Hirst

A cruel and disturbing page has appeared on Facebook which promotes Dog Fighting.  It features graphic photos and comments lauding the practice of animals tearing each other apart for human entertainment.  It is violent and deeply disturbing to dog lovers in particular and anyone who believes that such cruelty is abhorent. Yet its members arrogantly proclaim it as a worthy "sport" that has gone on since the time of the emperors.

Several people have reported the page as being cruel and violent.  However as it is not an American page but originates from a country where dog fighting appears to be legal, and is neither adult in nature nor promotes hate against humans--unless you oppose them--Facebook does not seem to think there is anything wrong with it.

Below is the answer from Facebook when the photo shown here which was displayed on their page was reported:

"We reviewed your report of dog fighting's photo Thank you for taking the time to report something that you feel may violate our community standards. Reports like yours are an important part of making facebook a safe and welcoming environment. We reviewed the photo you reported for annoying and distasteful humor and found it doesn't violate our community standards"

Here is the page.  At the risk of upsetting you, have a look and if it disgusts you please take a stand.

Please tell Facebook that promoting animal cruelty is wrong.

Dear Mr Zuckerberg,

There is a page on Facebook promoting Dog Fighting.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dog-Fighting/284056811763481?hc_location=timeline

We the undersigned would like this page deleted.  Not only is the page and its images completely offensive but dog fighting is illegal in most parts of the world, including the country of origin of this page.  In the United states dog fighting is a felony punishable with up to 5 years in jail and up to $5,000 in fines.  In essence, this page is promoting criminal activity.

Animal advocates consider dog fighting among the most serious of animal abuse not only because of the violence experienced by the animals in the pit but the cruelty involved in their training.  "Bait" animals are used to test the animals which are very often stolen pets: kittens, puppies, rabbits etc, which are mauled and killed in the fighting dog's training.  Bait animals are also obtained from shelters or "free to good home" ads.  They are duct taped for "training" so they can't fight back.

If governments do not condone this practice, why does Facebook?  Please remove this page and others like it, and please include the promotion of criminal animal abuse among the pages prohibited by Facebook's Terms of Service.  Freedom of speech is one thing but it shouldn't be to promote violent criminal activity.

Your attention to this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Hello All

It appears that this page has indeed been taken down, at least for the moment. We can keep the momentum going on this so that another one does not show up in its place. Thank you to all who spoke out about this important issue. Its people like you who really make a difference.
