Black Votes Matter in Guilford County North Carolina

Yes, we have made great strides as a people but that does not give us license to ignore that the fight for equality continues.

Black Votes Matter

According to democracy-nc.org and I quote, “black turnout as a percent of registered voters who cast ballots declined in 32 of the 100 counties in North Carolina from the 2010 primary to the 2014 primary, including 16 counties where African Americans are over 29% of the registered voters. Now imagine the effects of VIVA or the Voter Information Verification Act that will suppress African American voter turnout in 2015.

Black Votes Matter

The fact that same-day registration is no more, the fact that out of precinct ballots will not be counted, or the fact that high school students can no longer register to vote will cause the voice of African Americans to be hushed to a lull if that. The VIVA is meant to eliminate, deter, and discourage African American representation.

Coupled with intimidation tactics, VIVA appears to be the catalyst that turns back the hands of time where African American concerns will no longer take precedence in the United States governmental system.

Black Votes Matter

Right here in Guilford county political leaders have altered the county districts to their benefit. This will silence progressive White democrats and isolate African Americans according to journalist Afrique Kilimanjaro.

Black Votes Matter

Michele L Jawando of the Center for American Progress wrote a compelling letter to Kim Westbrook Strach of the State Board of Elections expressing the disenfranchisement of African American voters. However, we as human beings cannot afford to just be symbolic in this dark hour.

Black Votes Matter

The Guilford County elections are right around the corner and we, as African Americans, must as a collective whole harness our resources to impact change that will reverberate to future generations. We must aggressively ensure that every African American is ready on November 3, 2015.
