Make Verona a walk & bike-friendly town!

We respectfully petition the Verona Mayor and Town Council to adopt a Complete Streets policy and make Verona streets safe for walking and bicycling. Please make safe and sustainable travel a township priority. Speeding cars, “rolling stops”, red light passing and smartphone-distracted drivers create dangerous streets. The New Jersey Department of Transportation has implemented a Complete Streets policy to accommodate all users of all ages and abilities, pedestrians, bicyclists, children, seniors, non-drivers, people with disabilities and transit riders, not just automobiles. Essex County adopted a Complete Streets policy, as well as 130 municipalities in New Jersey. The most serious collisions are caused by high speeds. Traffic calming strategies compel people to drive carefully, making streets safer for everybody. Complete streets might include high visibility crosswalks, exclusive pedestrian crossing time, bicycle lanes, bike racks, street trees, speed cameras and frequent crossing opportunities. Funding for these important safety measures is available.

Benefits of Complete Streets:

• Improve safety by providing dedicated facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists.

• Support NJ Safe Routes to School, an initiative to make walking and bicycling to school safe and appealing.

• Promote healthy life styles.

• Enhance air quality.

• Strengthen the local economy.

• Create more livable communities and improve the quality of life. x
