McCarran International Airport: Take Responsibility for Luggage Breakdown!

  • by: Andrew G
  • recipient: Philip Detmer, Aviation Affairs Manager, McCarran International Airport

On March 12, late at night in Las Vegas, I was screwed out of a trip to Europe by the McCarran International Airport.

I arrived at Las Vegas around 10:15 PM, knowing I had to dash to get my luggage and catch my next flight at 11:55 PM--but everyone from my flight was left waiting, with workers from Allegiant Airlines physically pulling bags one by one up the ramp to the baggage carousel!

I abandoned my bag when I saw which way the wind was blowing, but as this was late at night I could not reach anyone at the airline counter to check in, and after 20 minutes of being STEPS away from my gate, my plane took off without me.

McCarran International Airport blames Allegiant in part, but mostly me -- for not making a tight international connecting flight. THEY WON'T REFUND ME. I filed a travel insurance claim, but they have washed their hands of me.

Sign my petition--don't let McCarran weasel out of this! It was their equipment that broke down, and I did have a chance to make my flight, no matter what they say! This is total corporate tyranny, and what is the little guy supposed to do when THEY SCREW UP?

Thank you for your support!

***UPDATE 5/17/17***

Allegiant Airlines confirmed that it was McCarran's equipment that broke down:

"Our records show that when you arrived to Las Vegas, Nevada (LAS) on your Allegiant flight the LAS airport’s baggage carrousel had a mechanical malfunction that caused a delay in returning your checked bag, as well as the other passengers on your flight. Allegiant agents are not permitted to fix the airport carrousel and a LAS airport facilities employee had to be called in order fix the jam and get the bags on the carrousel. We regret that this delay in getting your bag to you caused you to miss your connection flight."

Dear Mr. Detmer: Please refund Andrew Garrett's flight costs.  It would definitely be the kind and morally right thing to do--a million things could have gone wrong but this one was McCarran's responsibility. He made every effort to make his flight on time, even abandoning his luggage when the breakdown occurred, but that was the nail in the coffin, and he missed his flight. For your airport's reputation, please reconsider, and make this right.

Thank you to all signers of this petition!

McCarran International Airport never did refund my flight, but another, wiser link in the chain of events did get my money back! Feeling very grateful and thankful. Don't let big air travel companies walk all over you--when something's wrong, complain!!!
