Forbid politic messages in online targeted ads

Today, online targeted ads such as Facebook or Google ads allow lobbies and influence groups to deliver opinionated political messages to specific populations and demographic groups, without any transparency nor accountability. They make it possible to broadcast tailored messages to a social circle without anyone else knowing about their frequency nor their contents.

This practice puts our democracy at risk: democracy assumes that every citizen has access to the same publicly available information to form their own opinion on questions put to vote.

Each party in a political debate should be given a chance to challenge other parties' arguments, so that citizens have in hand the necessary data to make an informed choice.

Targeted messages allow lobbies to control opinion groups by feeding them with information reinforcing their pre-existing opinions, ensuring that they never are exposed to contradictory arguments that could possibly change their mind. This leads to an increasingly divided and disrespectful politic debate, threatening our unity as a nation.

For these reasons, we ask that online ads platforms acknowledge their responsibilities and stand up for our democracy by refusing to broadcast targeted political messages. This includes but is not limited to social media, news websites, and search engines.

Internet has become the primary source of information for many of us, let's make sure it's empowering us rather than dividing us.
