Ensure Felony Charges for all Crimes of Animal Abuse, Cruelty & Neglect in Kentucky

  • by: Sue Lee

Kentucky has varying degrees of charges for crimes against animals that appear to have little effect on abusers and animals continue to be victimized.  Animal cruelty in the state is defined as “intentionally or wantonly subjecting any animal to or causes cruel or injurious mistreatment through abandonment, participates in causing it to fight for pleasure or profit, (including, but not limited to being a spectator or vendor at such an event) mutilation, beating, torturing, tormenting, failing to provide adequate food, drink, space, or health care, or by any other means; or subjects any animal in his custody to cruel neglect; or kills any animal.”  Read more on Kentucky animal cruelty laws at http://www.straypetadvocacy.org/PDF/AnimalCrueltyLaws.pdf & http://www.humanesocietyall.com/laws/

If the charges for such acts are not more stringent with severe penalties, the abuse will never stop. People know right from wrong and are aware that mistreatment of animals is cruel and unjust.  Anyone who abuses an animal needs to be held accountable for any actions against these living creatures.  The respect and care of animals should begin with our youth, teaching them that animals are not objects without feelings. There is never an excuse for mistreating an animal and the only way to stop such abuse is to make a strong statement through tough felony charges and stringent penalties.

Along with the felony offense and appropriate consequences, the offender would be listed as a registered animal abuser that would prevent future mistreatment, ownership and encounters with any animals for a lifetime, guaranteed.  Strict measurements need to be taken and fully enforced in order to put an end to such animal cruelty. The purpose of this petition is to urge Kentucky State Legislators to escalate all of their animal cruelty charges to felonies with severe jail time, fines and possible community service hours.
