Protect UK Sea Birds from Hazardous Chemicals

  • by: Nyack Clancy
  • recipient: Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron

Off the south coast of England in early 2013, more than 500 seabirds were killed or disabled. In recent years, there have been thousands of seabirds deaths iin the Irish and North Seas. All the deaths are connected to a hazardous man-made chemical that was covering the birds. These death tolls come from the birds that washed up on the shore; no one is sure how many birds died and sea but were never found.

When washing out cargo tanks with the man-made synthetic polymer known as polyisobutene, - known as PIB -, it is legal with to discharge the hazardous noxious chemicals directly into the sea. Otherwise, it is illegal to discharge mineral oil directly into the seas.

We ask that this chemical, polyisobutene, be banned from washing out cargo ships as there is enough evidence to suggest it is killing sea birds, and could harm other marine wildlife as well.
