Carmel Unified School District (CUSD) Board Must Conduct a Nationwide Search for a Superintendent

PLEASE DISPLAY YOUR NAME SO THAT YOUR SIGNATURE IS VISIBLE TO THE BOARD OR AT LEAST LEAVE A COMMENT

Former Carmel Unified School District (CUSD) superintendent, Dr. Barb Dill-Varga, was shockingly fired in May 2020, 2 months into the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trisha Dellis, who only moved to Monterey 1 yr ago after accepting a job as Chief Human Resources Officer, was immediately appointed "interim" superintendent of CUSD. More than 6 months since Dill-Varga's departure, the CUSD school board has not initiated any action to find a permanent replacement.

The current board (Tess Arthur, Sara Hinds, Seaberry Nachbar, Karl Pallastrini, and Anne-Marie Rosen) need to act on their fiduciary responsibility to the community and conduct a nationwide search for the most qualified superintendent for CUSD. There is no more important job for the school board than hiring a Superintendent.

Ms. Dellis, can certainly apply for the job but it is in the best interest of CUSD to cast a wide net for the most qualified candidate.

If the interim superintendent, Trisha Dellis, prevails in a competitive selection process, it will leave no doubt that she is the best possible candidate for the job.

That assuredness can only come if we consider her application in the context of other applications, and give all of the applicants careful and open-minded consideration. Our children and the community deserve nothing less.

The board is meeting next week to discuss next steps for sup search. At the last meeting Anne Marie Rosen suggested an internal search! Who does she think is qualified to lead CUSD as a sup? NO ONE. Dellis gets to retire with ~$100k added to her pension for a majority of her life. This board fired a qualified sup, instated an unqualified interim sup, spiked up her salary, and now wants to do the same to another unqualified district employee. This must to stop! Hire a qualified, experienced sup!

New Year needs New Beginnings. Mark your calendar for the January 20 CUSD Board Meeting during which the school board will decide whether or not to conduct a search for a permanent superintendent. Reach out to the board if you haven’t already, and let others know about this petition. The number of signatures, especially those with comments, matters. It is obvious that our current interim superintendent is over her head. CUSD needs and deserves a problem solving, fearless leader.

Superintendent search is not included on the agenda, but you can make ask questions or comments during the “general comments” period and request a special meeting
Update #23 years ago
Last week, we requested that the sup search be added to the Dec 16th board meeting, along with the 85+ signatures supporting the search. Karl Pallistrini refused & stated that it’s scheduled for the 1st meeting in January. That’s unacceptable! Please email the board & demand a special meeting for this. Thank you all for signing this very important petition. Please share with any other Carmel, Carmel Valley, Pebble residents/CUSD stakeholders so that we can get the signature tally up to 150 or even 200 before the next CUSD board meeting on December 16th. Unfortunately, many people are not aware of how important this matter is, so it’s important that they be informed. Thanks again.
