Please STOP taking away from Riverside Children

A large and growing number of parents in Riverside are advocating for fair and equitable resources for our children at Riverside Elementary School. These parents feel the quality of the educational experience has dropped in recent years, a feeling that is supported by data that shows Riverside has dropped in state ranking, at one point as much as 48 spots, while other schools in the district have improved 10, 20, 50 or, in two cases, approximately 100 places.

By electronically signing this petition you will show your support for.

1) Smaller Class Sizes - Riverside has the most crowded classrooms in the entire district. The data shows, year in and year out, that Riverside has some of the largest class sizes in the district, above accepted norms for productive learning environments and among some of the largest classes in the whole state of Connecticut – falling in the low 20th percentile when compared against 9 years of data. We ask the Board of Ed re-evaluate class size guidelines, lowering and/or narrowing the bands, and then applying those guidelines consistently throughout the district.

2) Allocating specialist teachers based on documented academic needs - Riverside has the worst ratio of Specialists per student (Special Ed, ESL/ELL) in the district. Despite being the largest school, Riverside has the lowest number of identified Special Ed children, less than half the district average. Inconsistent testing standards and support models are being deployed.

3) Differential Investment in Riverside School - Riverside School has the second lowest spending per student in the district and spending per student about half of the best funded schools in the district. Riverside’s actual / budget spending per student has remained fundamentally flat while other schools have seen dramatic growth in spending per student.
