At a time when trust in the American Government is at an all time low, and just when you think that the government couldn’t get any sneakier, they go and find new lows, and new ways to deepen that mistrust. In a move akin to kicking sand in the face of an already wary public - they are implementing a new way of keeping tabs on our every move.
And with the Americans government’s unconvincing track record on rolling out online schemes – think healthcare. We have every reason to be a little fearful. And that is putting it mildly.
This new harebrained scheme has been very disingenuously named as “Drivers license for the Internet.” Sound rather tame, doesn’t it. But the reality is that it gives the government access to everything that we do online. Even worse, your identity credentials will all be stored by a third party company, such as Google, or Amazon for instance. One password to rule them all: A hackers dream, our worst nightmare. A buffet meal of everyone credentials in one place. I can already see hackers smacking their lips whilst drooling over their keyboards.
How will they do it you ask: They want to create a single, secure online ID that Americans could use to verify their identity across multiple websites. The ultimate goal is a replacement of many logins and passwords people maintain to access content and participate in comment threads and forum.
So, all of your details will be available to a government who has proven that they cannot be trusted, and hosted my unscrupulous companies who have a nasty track record of farming and selling personal data without batting an eyelid.
You do not have a choice, or so the government would like you to believe. But you do! You have a voice. That will be heard. You can stop this, and you can make a difference. This scheme is still in its pilot phase, they have started testing in two US States: Michigan and Pennsylvania. Lets nip this one in the bud before it ever takes off. It goes no further.
