To environmentalists and citizens around the world:
Please help us save Roșia Montană (Apuseni Mountains, Transylvania) from cyanide mining and an ecological disaster that would affect not only Romania, but Hungary, Serbia and most probably the Danube Delta, one of Europe's great gifts of nature.
The Romanian government has just approved a special law drafted for Gabriel Resources Ltd, a Canadian corporation that plans to destroy 4 mountains, 3 villages, 7 kilometers of galleries from the Roman Empire and leave with massive amounts of the country's gold for almost nothing (6% of the profits will go to the Romanian state, but the devastation which they will leave behind will be far beyond this).
Romanian citizens - parents, students, business people, artists, journalists, people of all backgrounds - are rising up to protect the environment, and to demand good governance, an end to corruption and abuse by foreign corporations, and to be treated with dignity and respect.
And we're asking for your support. We need the help of environmental organisations and solidarity groups world-wide. We need the help of students and people who care for the environment. Like in many countries around the world these last years - we're rising up to demand accountable government, and to ensure the protection of the environment.
Please organise solidarity events in your city in front of Romanian Embassies and Consulates or in central locations which will receive media coverage. Please encourage members of your environmental organisations, or your networks and friends to take part. Please also reach out to journalists and political leadership in your country to encourage them to raise awareness and bring pressure upon the Romanian government to shut down Rosia Montana Gold Corporation and remove Gabriel Resources from Romania.
