Please help us save our dog!!

Target:
To keep our Staffordshire Terrier in Brantford, ON.
Heira is a 7 year old Staffordshire terrier, who has been a loved member of our family for over 6 years. We got Heira from a local animal rescue organization. She had been saved from an abusive owner who was starving her, beating her, and breeding her (she had a litter of pups at around 6 months old). It has taken us years to get her health back up but there is some unfortunate internal damage. She does not always know when she needs the bathroom. Heira has a sad story to tell, and we, her loving family, do not want a sad ending.

On Friday Feb. 15 2008 I went to city hall to get Heira her 2008 dog license. There I am told that we did not get her a 2007 dog license, thus we have three options.

1) Find her a home out of Brantford, ON Canada
2) Kill her
3) Let the SPCA take her

This is all because of City of Brantford, ON Municipal Codes Chapter 206 (the pit-bull ban). She had been grandfathered in, but by not getting her 2007 license she forfeits that clause.

If Heira was any other breed of dog there would be no problem getting her a license. If she was any other breed of dog that had a history of biting and had been deemed a dangerous dog, we would have received a $130 fine. The problem is she is a pit-bull.

Heira is an extremely loving dog. She is an 80pds lap dog who loves to play with my two year old son Quenton. Heira is our child and a big sister. I know she would die to save any member of this family, and we will not lose her without a fight!

We are asking for your support to help us save our dog.

I think if the animal has no prior history of violence and they follow all the proper procedurees in public when taking the dog for a walk like a muzzle and stuff then they should be allowed to give the animal the love and care it should have received in the first place. If the government spent more time making punishments higher for animal abuse maybe there wuld not be so many animals that end up bad that were always good.

I think that it is wrong. A dog is what youmake of it you saved this dog from abusive people and im sure you have gotten attached to. They should allow you to get the licence. If this was a human they would not be like that. If people who abuse these anaimals get a second chance then so should the dog

I have a Cocker who I love. He is on meds to help with his personality. All dogs are worth saving. They need help. We will spend all the money we have to keep our dog safe and safe from others.

How dare people discriminate against one breed of dog simply because it has a history of biting?! The country took a few unfortunate cases to be the judgment of all the dogs of that breed. However, they are unwilling to look beyond that at the majority of pit bulls who are beloved family members, and decide to just kill them all. This is unjust. Leave this dog alone!

I have 2 pitbulls and 1 welsh corgy also i have 5 cats. We have a big happy family. I think what needs to happen is to go after the owners of the bad dogs not the breed. Just because the dog is a pitbul it doesn't mean a thing. i'm tired of them being put down everywhere, but when all the problems first started there was nothing done to the immature owners that made them fight and kill.

I volunteer at an animal shelter every Friday. One of the staff members owns a pit bull and brings it to work. He sits right in front reception area and has never done any harm to humans or the other animals there. I work with the cat and kittens and brought a kitten over to him and rested the kitten on his back while he was relaxing. He did just fine. He is a very sweet dog. Not all pit bulls are evil. It has to do with how they are raised.

Good luck, Badly legislated laws caused the same problems in the U.K. including a dog being ordered to be killed because the owner removed the mussel when the dog vomited. Lucky a right thinking judge stop the action blamed parliament for rushing legislation without full consider due to public panic.

Hello I have read your story and think that they are unfair i would like to see how they have wrote there law becouse if they have pit bull named in there law there is no such breed as a pit bull. the name pit bull was a job that dogs where trained to do and not a breed! also i have been looking in to this law for certain dogs be deemed a dangerous dog. i have found a law that is in the Animal rights, also known as animal liberation, is the idea that the interests of animals, such as the interest in avoiding suffering, should be afforded the same consideration as the interests of human beings.[1] Although animal rights advocates approach the issue from different philosophical positions, they argue, broadly speaking, that animals should no longer be regarded as property, or used as food, clothing, research subjects, or entertainment, but should instead be regarded as legal persons and members of the moral community.[2][3] The idea of awarding rights to animals has the support of legal scholars such as Alan Dershowitz and Laurence Tribe of Harvard Law School.[4][2] Steven Wise, also of Harvard Law School, argues that the first serious judicial challenges to what he calls the "legal thinghood" of animals may only be a few years away.[5] Animal law courses are now taught in 97 out of 180 law schools in the United States,[6] and animal rights is routinely taught in universities as part of applied ethics or philosophy courses. Robert Garner of the University of Leicester calls it the "new morality."[7] Critics argue that animals are unable to enter into a social contract or make moral choices, and therefore cannot be regarded as possessors of rights, a position summed up by the philosopher Roger Scruton, who writes that only human beings have duties and that "[the] corollary is inescapable: we alone have rights."[8] An argument that often runs parallel to this is that there is nothing inherently wrong with using animals as resources for human purposes, though there is an obligation to ensure they do not suffer unnecessarily, a view known as the animal welfare position. im still in the research stage. i hope everything works out.

I think its absolutely sick that a the city would rather the dog be put down or given to the SPCA than let her remain with a family that obviously cares about her very much.

These dogs are the best. Every breed of dogs have vicious ones not just pit bulls. This is pathetic and they should be allowed 2 keep their dog in Brantford!!!!!

This is extremely prejudice to determine the outcome simply because the breed is a pit bull. Please, reconsider your decision. This pet is a family member.

This is absolutely immorale and should be stopped immeditately from happening to innocent breeds due to ill informed stupid people.
