Inuit seal hunting accounts for about 3% of the total seal hunt. The rest is Commercial Hunting.
The Commercial Seal Hunters use the Inuit as a shield to continue doing what they are doing. It is a strategy to use the noble Inuit people as human shields.
The Commercial Sealers say that the seals eat all the codfish, so that is why they "need" to cull them. IN REALITY...the Seals diet consists only 3% of cod.
Each year, baby seals are killed for their fur. Since, for every bullet hole, 2 dollars are taken off, most people prefer not to shoot them. Instead, they use clubs with metal hooks on the end to hit the seals with.
In fact, in 2001, an independent team of veterinarians studied the hunt and saw that the normal regulations and basic animal welfare rights weren't being followed. Some of the seals had even been skinned while they were still alive.
Even when the hunting goes above the limit, the government doesn't do anything to stop it. And if you are wondering, stopping the seal hunt wouldn't hurt Canada's economy since it's an off-season activity. Yet the government still provides thousands of dollars for the development of seal products. A lot of taxpayer money can go into this, too.
Hundreds of thousands of seals are killed each year. In the 2006 hunt, the government allowed a lot more than 350 000 seals to be clubbed and shot. The last time seals were killed like this, the harp seal population went down by almost two thirds. The actual number of seals killed is probably higher than this since many seals are wounded and left to fall into the water, where they die and are never recovered.
Nearly one million seals have been killed in the past the three years alone, and there's more to come.
Armed with clubs and hakapiks, sealers bludgeon, hack then skin pups while they are still conscious and able to feel pain, leaving them to die on the ice in pools of their own blood.
Not only do we want to stop the Commercial Seal Hunt, but we want to stop the Inuit Seal Hunt for a while. NOTHING against the Inuit/Inuk/Native people, but because the SEAL MEAT IS CONTAMINATED WITH METHYL MERCURIC POISON! We want them to stop eating the seals because we don't want them to be poisoned. Then after the seals and the oceans are clear from contamination/poison...then they can be allowed to hunt again. They don't hunt year round. They only hunt during the spring season. But even that takes a toll.
Non-Native Canadians, including Newfoundland sealers, have contaminated the arctic. As an example, the DFO just approved the dumping of over 400,000 tonnes of heavy metal mine waste into bodies of water all over Newfoundland and Canada. Who APPROVED THIS TOXIC POISON DUMPING??
ANSWER: The DFO. The Department of Fisheries, which operates and RUNS the seal hunt! That is who gave mining corporation Inco permission to dump toxic waste into Canadian bodies of water.
Where does the toxic heavy metal poisoning go? It goes into the sea, where it is absorbed by minnows, which are then eaten by larger fish and multiply the dose, which are then eaten by Seals and now you have the bodies of Seals so polluted with toxic poison built up in their systems from ingesting thousands of fish already dosed with mercury, that the Seal meat in the seal's body is a mouth full of Brain poison! Who did it? White sealers, and the agency that RUNS the seal hunt. Any person cheering the seal hunt is hurting Native peoples!

That is correct. Seal meat is now TOXIC! The Inuit diet is now not healthy, in fact, the diet of seal and/or whale meat has resulted in the Inuit in the Arctic being THE MOST HIGHLY CONTAMINATED HUMAN POPULATION ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH!
DO NOT eat Seal meat! It is now contaminated with Methyl Mercuric toxin, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, and Brominated Flame Retardants.
Any individual ingesting seal meat containing Mercury can have stunted brain growth. This applies to YOU, Your family, and your children. Your children can be born deformed, with birth defects.
Methyl Mercury in Seal Meat is a potent Neurotoxin. It eats away at the brain's cognitive capacity. Ingesting seal meat touted and cheered by pro-sealers results in a child being born with learning disabilities, with Low IQ, and organ damage.
Therefore ANY PERSON supporting or cheering the seal hunt, is hurting and damaging Inuit people, Inuit families, and hurting Native children!

ALSO: NOT ONLY are the seals and the Inuit/Inuk/Native/Aboriginal people are getting contaminated...but also the other predators that eat the seals are also getting contaminated, and showing effects just like the Natives. Orcas are also getting contaminated. The higher up in the food chain an animal is, the more infected they become. This is due to the predator consuming all of the chemicals from their prey.
Many arctic animals such as beluga whales, seals, seabirds, and polar bears are affected.
Polar bears are heavily contaminated with extremely harmful chemicals such as PCBs & pesticides. Other chemicals include flame retardant, arsenic, mercury, lead & fluorinated chemicals. These chemicals accumulate in fatty tissues and readily pass through the walls of cells.
Chemicals such as the above cause huge disruptions in the natural hormonal balance.
This change in hormones influences behavioral changes . One example is the modification of testosterone concentrations in male polar bears. Even more disturbing is that these chemicals modify the white and red blood cell count. The immune system is often weakened and at times is compromised. With a compromised immune system the polar bear may not be able to produce a sufficient number of antibodies to fight off an infectious disease.
When beluga whales wash ashore they often have to be disposed of as hazardous waste. This should be a clear indication that there is a man-made problem.
In humans high concentrations of PCBs has been linked to birth defects. There is no reason to believe that polar bears could not suffer the same fate. IN 1976 the US congress banned PCBs and most other nations followed suit. Unfortunately PCBs still remain with us. Humans clearly need to learn a lesson from this. More research has to be done prior to launching new chemicals, and the use of these chemicals has to be monitored. Flame retardants is a perfect example, they have been used without supervision by industries for far too long. Flame retardants are extremely harmful to the environment and all forms of life.
The polar bears health and our own health is reliant on humans reducing the use of chemicals. We need to become less dependant on them, and only use chemicals that have proven themselves harmless.

Polar bears feed mainly on ringed and bearded seals.
Depending on where they are located (e.g. Canadian, Norwegian, Russian arctic areas) they may also eat harp, hooded, and the occasional ribbon seal.
The largest proportion of a polar bear's annual caloric intake occurs between late April and mid-July. Food availability during this period is critical for maintaining their proper body weight to survive the ice-free season, when prey is harder to catch for bears that remain on the sea ice and little or no food is available for bears who remain on shore.
For bears that come ashore in areas such as the Hudson Bay in Canada, this food-free season can last 3 to 4 months or even longer, now that climate change is beginning to take its toll and the ice pack forms later in the season.

The Sealers aren't worried about the contamination or if they are hurting the animals or even the people they sell the animals to...this mostly includes other countries. Countries overseas are the only countries that want to buy fur and meat...also collogen. Did you know that collogen is from the seals blubber...which they inject into people's faces!!! Apple rejects "Seal-Clubbing Game" from App Store:
With all the missing iPhone drama dogging Apple recently, who would have thought that the next issue to plague the tech firm would be seal hunting?
Last week the company rejected a video game submitted to their App Store that would let players club virtual seals on their handheld devices.
The game’s designer, Matt Smyth, a Canadian software engineer, can’t understand why.The 28-year-old from St. John’s, N.L., wrote on his blog:
"So I decided to develop a game based on the seal hunt (with a club). You play a seal hunter armed with a club against an unlimited number of seals. Tilting the device in the desired direction moves the club around the screen, and making a flicking motion causes the club to hit a seal or the ground. I tired to keep the game light hearted as possible with no blood, or clubbing baby seals. Well… you can try and club the baby seals, but you lose points and they just take off really fast."
The game, called iSealClub, isn’t the first one that Apple has shunned from its online store. Professional developers and hobbyists alike can create and submit applications to the App Store, but some for one reason or another, some don’t make the cut. Panned games include the real life-inspired MyShoe, where you throw footwear at George W. Bush, and Baby Shaker, where you shake babies until they stop crying.
According to Apple’s rejection letter, iSealClub contained “objectionable content,” but Smyth disagrees. He told Canadian Press:
“I was careful not to make the game graphic or have any gore or anything. It’s very light-hearted. It’s all cartoon based. It’s not what you would consider a very violent game. I know it involves clubbing seals, but (it’s) no different than the way people get clubbed in Mickey Mouse or Looney Tunes.”
Smyth wonders whether Apple rejected the game because they oppose the Canadian seal hunt. He calls this unfair because the hunt is socially acceptable in his province and sanctioned by the federal government. And in his game, just in like real life, hunting baby seals in illegal. This observance of the law, he argues, makes his game less “objectionable” compared to other games available in the App Store that let players shoot cops and steal cars, like Grand Theft Auto.
“I have that on my phone,” he said. “You can walk around, shoot cops in cold blood, and watch them sort of fall down in their own pool of blood.”
But what Smyth is forgetting is that cops are not nearly as cute as cuddly seals.

We are not against the Traditional Inuit Seal Hunt... we are against the White Commercial Seal Hunt that only hunts for greed, and nothing more. Although the Traditional Inuit Seal Hunt should be stopped as well...since the seals are contaminated!
This is the industrial age now and the seals are contaminated with levels of methyl mercuric poison above the human limit and is unfit for human consumption!

In far northern villages such as Qaanaaq, where Inuit live, one out of every six adults tested exceeded 200 parts per billion of mercury in the blood, a dose known to cause acute symptoms of mercury poisoning, according to a 2003 United Nations report.
lnuit who eat the blubber and meat of whales, and the meat or oil of seals, ingest huge amounts of contaminants, which accumulate in these particular animals' fat, and magnify in concentration with each step.
EATING SEAL MEAT IS HURTING & DAMAGING THE INUIT PEOPLE!
THE PRODUCTS PRODUCED BY THE SEAL HUNT ARE HURTING PEOPLE!
We want the Commecial Seal Hunt to PERMANENTLY STOP! And to stop the Inuit Seal Hunt until all the contamination is gone!
