Many of us have witnessed the unbelievable numbers of large catfish being taken by commercial fishermen and trotliners , juggers, limbliners, and rod and reel fishermen alike. We feel the catfish population cannot sustain the numbers being harvested. We hope to slow that down by enacting a law to prohibit the harvest of more than one catfish over 34 inches per day. This law would affect commercial fishermen and pleasure recreational fishermen alike.

Please consider this petition. We have a wonderful resource here that could be in danger. This legislation has been passed in other states and has made a noticeable difference in the quality of fish in a few short years. I know the MDC is one of the most Proactive agencies in the country and would hope they would really consider this petition.

As a former resident of Missouri and current resident of Illinois who has fished the Mississippi for many years, we need this law to be passed to protect these trophy fish. Hopefully IL will follow with similar legislation.

I have never caught a catfish over 34" and can't even image that someday there may not be cats that big if folks keep taking and not putting them back in the waters. The big thing is if this passes, Conservation must step up more on the rivers as far as enforcing and checking folks. I mean I have been fishing for 20 years and have only been checked once, come on do your jobs. I would be happy to show my license and chat with any officer that is doing his/her job.

I would support laws to limit the commercial fisherman to one fish per person over 34" a day as well. The law to not allow the transportation of live fish across state lines is also directly designed to keep pay pond netters out of our waters.

I'm all for the 34" rule, but I would also like to see the number of hooks for trotline/limb lines cut back. a person on a boat certainly can't fish 33 hooks, they might be lucky to fish 12 hooks ( 6 tandem rig baits).

We must act NOW!! Thousand of large catfish are being harvested each year by commercial fisherman, and trotliners. I have video footage of two 30' plate boats loaded to the gunnels with fish that were taken on the Mississippi River last winter. It's been known that catfish are a slow growing species, especially in the more northern states, such as Missouri. Take trotliners for example...I know guys who run trotlines all year long. These guys keep everything they catch and have no respect for the species at all. What family of 4 is gonna eat hundreds of pounds of fish per year? If we enact a 34" law, the alternative methods people will still be able to trotline and still keep 1 large fish, and I think we will notice a difference in short time. Kind of like the counties in Missouri where they enacted a 4 point restriction for deer. We can have a trophy fishery just like Alabama, Tennessee, ect if we all work together and do something to protect this great fish.
