Building a new road to increase transportation efficiency is highly sought after, but at what costs? Our beloved nature preserve is in danger of being another habitat lost to human development, and here’s your chance to be the factor in changing that fate.
By signing this petition, you will be ensuring a future for the White Point Community that involves an increase in the awareness and appreciation for the environment.
As you may know, a portion of the Paseo Del Mar road that once passed alongside the White Point Nature Preserve succumbed to a landslide years ago. Since then, the issue of how to restore the area has been one of great controversy- but I think the best solution is quite simple.
Our fellow Angelenos want a quicker way to get from point A to point B, but a road built through our preserve is not the way!
Research from the Paseo Del Mar Initial Study shows that building a road would have significant impacts on the following:
- Destruction of habitats and overall ecosystem for organisms present
- Preserve disturbance & road maintenance would be less cost effective
- Many of the cultural and educational benefits of the site (i.e. Nike Missile Site, educational center) would be diminished or even destroyed
- Emittance of harmful air pollutants (greenhouse gases)
After careful survey, some of the immediate concerns in our surrounding community include:
- Ability to continue using the preserve for its recreational advantages
- Connect with nature/learn about it & the history of the preserve
- Cost effectiveness
- Have a way to travel on this lost road again instead of having to take the long way around
The best way we can meet both the needs of the people as well as the needs of the preserve is to build a bridge connecting the two discontinued roadways. The bridge would work as a compromise, and would ultimately be more sustainable in that…
- Economically, the benefits of the bridge (i.e. ability for revenue flow) would outweigh the initial cost to build the structure
- It would allow for another option for transportation, as well as bring more people to the area & promote awareness of the preserve
- Ability to educate about the local environment without disturbing it directly
