Free Men of Stigma in the Media

Men have only ever been represented as “strong” in the media, that is all men know. Men tend to feel inadequate when they can’t live up to the representation of men that are shown in the media. Popular films, such as Lethal Weapon and Die Hard, star men who embody the stereotype of extreme masculinity. Men are presented to be hard, tough, independent of overall in control of emotions. Even the movement of “softer men” in the 70’s quickly died out because of the idea that men must live up to certain qualifications. Due to this representation, men try to live up to media’s version of a man. To help but an end to the stigma against men, we must end the view of how men should be in society.
The leaders in the media end up being producers of television shows and movies. The influence on men tends to start with these people. Producers have a strong hold on what society sees, and ultimately, believes. We need to get producers to understand the impact of creating the ideal man has on regular men in society. By signing this we can help men feel like they are represented and can finally be themselves again.
