NYC: Don't Ban E-Bikes!

Over the past few years, NYC has been a leader in promoting greener, alternative modes of transportation. They have expanded bike lanes, implemented a Citibike program and improved intersection designs. So why are authorities working to place further restrictions on electronic bike use?

According to the New York City Bicycling Coalition, electronic bikes, or e-bikes, confuse legislators because of their presence of a motor, which may put them in the category of unregistered motor vehicles. While some e-bikes require pedal assistance to work, others can be operated without pedaling. This latter category is subject to fines and impoundment.

E-bikes can help the elderly and others with limited pedaling ability get around without polluting the environment. It is unfair to restrict these bikes because of an arbitrary law that was written before these bikes became popular. Instead of banning the bikes, legislators should simply enforce bike laws and implement a speed limit in bike lanes to ensure that e-bikes can coexist safely with other bikes and pedestrians. Please sign the petition to urge NYC legislators to reconsider their regulations against e-bikes!

They have expanded bike lanes, implemented a Citibike program and improved intersection designs. In light of this, we are surprised that authorities are working to place further restrictions on electronic bike use.
