Demand SHFD Stop Sending Blood to NY Blood Center.

Blood is life. It therefore should not be donated to an organization that has no respect for life. Each year, the Southold NY Fire Department conducts blood drives for the benefit of New York Blood Center (NYBC). The Fire Department and local donors believe their acts represent good deeds.

Unfortunately, that is not the case. Any and all blood donated to the NYBC supports cruelty.

For a thirty year period starting in the mid-1970s, NYBC conducted experiments on over 400 hundred chimpanzees in Liberia, where they could capture, breed and experiment on them with little regulatory oversight. After the research was conducted, NYBC moved the survivors onto six islands with no natural food or water and made a public commitment to provide them with lifelong care.

In May, 2015, the NY Times reported that NYBC had “withdrawn all funding,” leaving the chimps to die of starvation and thirst. In order to keep the chimps alive, Liberians who had been employed by NYBC to deliver food and water, began to care for them on a volunteer basis. With virtually no resources and burdened by the Ebola outbreak in Liberia, these volunteers kept the chimpanzees alive until a coalition of over 30 animal conservation groups, led by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), raised funds from the public to pay for the chimps’ care on an emergency basis.

NYBC's actions have garnered condemnation from its own corporate donors, including MetLife and Citigroup. In 2015, Dr. Jane Goodall issued an open letter to NYBC, saying, "I find it completely shocking and unacceptable that NYBC would abandon these chimpanzees and discontinue support for even their basic needs.” In 2016, elected officials in New York demanded that the organization reinstate their support for the chimps.

Don't let your blood be used for cruelty.  Tell the Southold Fire Department you will not donate until they find a different recipient of their semi-annual blood drivess.

Dear Chief Rich:

Blood supports life - not cruelty.

Your semi-annual blood drives benefit the NY Blood Center.  But they are not deserving of your good will and the good deeds of all donors.

Every day, the calls of condemnation of NYBC's decision to foresake their research chimps grow louder.  Let your voice join the chorus by refusing to send support NYBC with blood drives until they do what is humane and right.
