Ontario Teachers Pension Plan is one of the owners of Shopper Drug Mart and they need to know what they are selling.

We the undersigned are appalled to the fact that you are selling and/or invested in the Shark Cartilage Product.

Sharks are being fished out of the ocean at an alarming rate for their fins(cartilage) to produce many forms of products and/or meals that are from a myth that they cure cancer. This Myth is wiping out the oldest species on the planet and you(Shopper Drug Mart, Costco, Holista, and Ontario Teachers Pension Plan) are apart of their demise.

This Product should be removed from your shelves immediately and a formal apology to the public of your disregard to the Shark who is inhumanely being killed just for its Fins.

Anyone with an ounce of humanity would understand that using animals for our own uneccessary gain is SICK and sould NOT BE TOLLERATED! The oceans of our world play a huge part in the balance of so many species of animal and plants, we have NO RIGHT to mess with that balance. The shark finning industry wastes a majority of the animal and does not comply with Australian euthanaizia regulations. The products created by the industry are sold for an overseas market (in majority) and the industry is based on making a few people very wealthy whilst raping and pilaging our oceans. It's disappointing to see that such large companies bought into this Chinese myth that's clearly a very primitive way of thinking. Sharks do get cancer, and on top of that they get slaughtered solely for their fins, and are then left to die in pain and defenseless in the ocean. This is done on a mass scale as shark fin soup is getting very popular as well as the ridiculous and ludicrous idea that the cartilage in powdered form will cure cancer. Please take this product off the shelves. Until you do, myself and a large number of people will be boycotting your stores.

By fishing sharks we not only destroy and magnificent and ancient species we also destroy the oceans eco system. Once the sharks are all gone a breakdown in the food chain occurs. August 23, 2008 To Shoppers Drugmart I am appalled to see you selling SHARK cartilage capsules. Today, hundreds of thousands of sharks are being destroyed needlessly to support shark cartilage supplements and shark fin soup industries. Shark populations worldwide have declined by 90% in the last decade. Available scientific evidence does not support claims that the shark cartilage that is sold as a food supplement is an effective treatment for cancer, osteoporosis, or any other disease. See:"Shark Cartilage Supplements Have NO Effect" American Cancer Society; Shark cartilage was first sold as an anti-cancer agent. The American Federal Trade Commission in 2000 sued the largest manufacturer, Lane Labs, for over a million dollars for this erroneous claim. Their product was taken off the shelves and they had to refund consumers. Companies continue to sell this product as anti-tumor and arthritis cures. While there is scientific evidence that chondroitin may have osteoarthritis benefits, bovine sources of cartilage are much less destructive on the environment. I implore you to remove shark cartilage pills from your shelves and help save these magnificent and important top predators of the seas.
