Accused of inducing the infamous Shaken Baby Syndrome, Veronica Martinez Salcedo is a 38 year old nanny who has been held in the Placer County, CA jail since May, 2006, charged with the second degree murder of 15 month old Hannah Rose Juceam. Her first trial lasted six months, and ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury. On 12/10/07, the Placer County District Attorney announced that she will be re-tried in April, 2008. Mrs. Salcedo has steadfastly maintained her innocence and has rejected plea bargains. Meanwhile, the father of the deceased child has waged a widely advertised campaign in a not so veiled attempt to deny Mrs. Salcedo her rights to due process and presumption of innocence, through the use of donation-financed billboards and a purportedly educational website: http://www.dontshakeyourbaby.com/, Partnerships with local law enforcement agencies and child advocacy groups are claimed. Her supporters suspect that Mrs. Salcedo, a widowed mother of two children, has been irresponsibly and erroneously accused of murder; and scapegoated, if you will, largely due to her illegal immigrant and indigent status.
