Hi 👋,
It is extremely tragic that people, including children, and animals are attacked and, often, killed by pit bulls and other dogs. However, discriminating and banning breeds and types of dogs is not the answer. Something needs to be done to stop dog attacks, but that something is not banning breeds and types of dogs. Let me explain...
American pit bull terriers, Fila Brasileiros, Argentinian mastiffs, Tosa inus and pit bull type dogs have been banned in the UK since 1991. However, dog attacks, including those on children, still occur in this country. Any dogs that are of these breeds and types that are not registered as exempt can be taken and killed. This is not right. There are many lovely, friendly pit bulls out there. Why should all dogs of certain breeds and types be discriminated against just because of some incidents and people who abuse them?
Here, I will respond to some arguments against these breeds and types:
"They are dangerous."
It is true that there have been many tragic attacks by these types of dogs. However, there are also many, many of these dogs who are non-aggressive. Some of these dogs have saved lives. Weela the pit bull saved 30 people, 29 dogs, 13 horses and a cat from
a flood and/or its aftermath. Weela also saved a man from a snake. Lefty the pit bull took a bullet for her person. Weezie saved his people from two armed men who entered their home. Angel the pit bull saved a strange woman and her child from an attacker with a knife. There are many, many other stories of hero pit bulls out there (look them up using Ecosia, Everyclick and Goodsearch, supporting good, ethical and animal-friendly causes). Aside from that, there are many, many lovely, friendly and good-natured pit bulls out there who are not (yet) heroes. Pit bulls have also been therapy dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, military dogs (indeed, the US Canine Corps is all thanks to a pit bull named Stubby) and assistance dogs, if I'm right. Did you know (apparently) Helen Keller had a pit bull? Yes, there are aggressive pit bulls, but there maybe just as many (or more) non-aggressive pit bulls. Some people will also argue that it is down to how the dogs are brought up. I would argue that temperament can be caused by upbringing, genetics, life experiences, training and the individual dog's character. Also, pit bulls score better than golden retrievers in American temperament tests.
"They are responsible for more attacks than any other dog breed/type."
This depends on the locality. However, the pit bulls may not be entirely to blame for this. Many are abused, neglected, not trained or raised properly, chained, provoked and/or used in dog-fighting. Also, even if they are responsible for more attacks than any other dogs, it is still wrong to judge all beings from a particular group by the majority, even if they are the majority. Also, this still doesn't change the facts that many, many pit bulls are wonderful.
"They were bred to kill."
This is true. However, so were many other breeds. Beagles, foxhounds, coonhounds, afghan hounds, jack russell terriers, Yorkshire terriers, jagdterriers, English bull terriers, greyhounds, harriers, Irish wolfhounds, deerhounds, otterhounds, rat terriers, cairn terriers, Norfolk terriers, Norwich terriers, fox terriers, some mastiffs and other breeds were all bred to kill. You don't hear of anyone saying all Yokrshire terriers are dangerous, do you?
Also, pit bull fighting dogs were bred to not be aggressive towards humans so that the dog-fighters could bring them back around for the next fight. The dogs would fight in the evening and then go home and play with and watch over the dog-fighters' children.
"Pit bulls have locking jaws."
This is false. There is no mechanism in a pit bull's jaws that would enable them to "lock".
Despite the fact that there are many, many lovely pit bulls out there, they are banned in too many parts of the world, along with other breeds and types, meaning that innocent dogs are killed.
Please repeal all breed-specific legislation and replace it with fairer, more humane, non-violent and more effective legislation aimed at tackling dog attacks. Here is what I would suggest:
* Laws requiring all dog carers to properly socialise and train their dogs, with harsh penalties.
* Better enforcement against dog-fighting and animal cruelty and harsher penalties.
* Laws against chaining dogs for more than three hours, and requiring all carers to properly provide for, love and care for their dogs.
* Better legislation against and penalties for allowing dogs to behave aggressively, both in public and on private property.
* Laws requiring all potential new dog carers to take courses in dog care and humane, positive reinforcement training, along with dog behaviour and canine psychology before they get dogs, or just requiring all potential new dog carers to do extensive research both on particular breeds and types and on dogs in general before they get dogs, and to have good experience and practice with dogs first (e.g. looking after other people's dogs, spending time with other people's dogs, volunteering and working with dogs).
* Requiring all dogs of particular breeds and types to wear muzzles whilst in public, and requiring any other individual dogs deemed dangerous to also wear muzzles in public.
* Requiring all interaction between dogs and children to be properly supervised by capable adults who know enough about dogs and love them and care about both the dogs and the children.
Please only allow animals to be killed when absolutely, 100% necessary (e.g. in self defence, euthanasia of incurably sick and/or injured animals who cannot be helped otherwise, putting down of animals with incurable, serious, dangerous behavioural/psychological problems, hunting and slaughtering for meat only allowed when necessary for survival).
Thank you 😊.
Best Wishes to all,
Rory.
Have the best day and night ever!
