Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Susan Combs wants to end wind energy sector subsidies while maintaining and increasing subsidies to oil and gas companies. This is just more evidence that the Texas government is in the pocket of Big Oil and Gas. With its abundant sunshine and always-blowing wind, Texas has the opportunity to lead the world in renewable energy. Because of the wind and solar resources of Texas, it's actually economically viable to choose wind and solar over oil and gas. However, the Texas goverment taxes wind and solar and subsidizes oil and gas to allow oil and gas companies to dominate the energy sector.
The subsidies provided by the Texas government to oil and gas companies are proof that the current leadership isn't as opposed to big government as they say they are. The current leadership is willing to stick the hand of the government into the markets when it benefits them. The only fair thing to do is to end all energy sector subsidies and let the market decide which energy sources to choose. Given the choice, Texas will choose renewable energy—solar and wind—over the oil and gas whose dominance the current leadership cares so much about maintaining.
